Tragic... this really has been a severe weather season of historic proportion.

That was one bad storm. Seems like these babies are hitting bigger cities straight on. :(

I just finished going over the 101 slides, I just can't express my feelings with words.

During my NWS career I had to survey several big tornado damage areas. As bad as it feels to look at the pictures, try to imagine walking through the area and trying to talk with the folks who are walking around in a daze. I'll never forget those times.

I really feel for those people, and like Dave says, I can't ever remember a tornado season as severe as this one. I'm glad to live in a place where tornado formation is virtually impossible. the relatively cold water around Long Island helps a lot! I've toyed with the notion of retiring in Nashville, but between the floods and the twisters, it sure makes you think twice.

That being said, I think we've seen the sun for about five minutes the last two weeks here. It's like living in the PacNW!

I'm pretty much at a loss for words. It's so difficult to imagine the tragedy of all the twisters and the floods this year. We're in the path of the Missouri storm and that's a bit of a concern. Yet, paths of earlier storms tended to split and go around us. We had two tornados just a few miles south of us last week moving straight up I-75N. At the last minute the system broke up. I just can't imagine the suffering of all those folks.

Peace

Don't say that out loud, Sandy. Very little is impossible when dealing with nature.

You're right Dave. Anything is possible here I suppose.

This spring was about as close as we've come to getting a twister here, from that supercell that spawned all those tornados in Tuscaloosa. Inland NJ had a few, and they died quickly as soon as they hit the cold Atlantic. It's like a fuel cutoff switch. 8)

We get Hurricanes here not tornadoes.....but we have a weeks notice minimum. They had 3 seconds.

I visited Joplin many times when I lived in SW Missouri, my heart goes out to the people there.

I lived in Kansas in 1991 when a tornado wiped out the town of Andover. I went there the following weekend with a group of volunteers to help with the cleanup, an experience most unforgettable and difficult to describe.

I left Wichita in the early morning on April 26, and was headed south on I-35 when I caught the leading edge of the wave of tornados that hit Tonkawa, OK, and eventually hit Andover. I only found out about it later when I heard the news on the radio. My journal notes are still pretty clear about that morning.
I remember stopping under an overpass to keep the golf ball-sized hail off my new, '91 Toyota.

Lightning, thunder, high winds....scary stuff in the dark!

Small world, ain't it Joe? I was 100 miles north of you that day, in Salina. I saw some big storms in Kansas, but that day was like something from a movie, hard to believe it was real.

It sort of set the stage for a strange time for me.
I was on my way to Louisiana to watch my Dad die and I've often wondered how the two events might have been related in some cosmic way. :?:

It is indeed a small world, Doc.

Mother Nature has just been so angry lately, all over the place.

Those things are hideous and I'm so sorry for all the poor souls who are victims of the ghastly thing.
