FWIW - I have played two Guild lookalike guitars in the past. Made in Japan, they looked pretty good and certainly caught my eye at the guitar shops. Nothing Guild about the tone in either case. MHO.

Damn good copy Frosty..... but.......only a Guild is a Guild :D Kinda like only a Frosty is a Frosty....I'm tryin' to steal some of your licks, but there will never be a day when I'll be mistaken for you. I so admire your playing, and your dog too! Hang in there my friend, you have no idea of the harvest you are partially responsible for. Probably a good thing too. Steffan

Someone will probably buy that axe, counterfeit a label and headstock logo, and we'll see it back on ebay as a pristine vintage D55 with marvelous tone, listed at $1995. :x

As a relative noob to guitar-playing, I am constantly amazed at how different two apparently-similar guitars can sound. Before I settled on my new D55 -- gets here today! Woo! -- I looked at quite a few similar guitars: D28's, D35's, and the Gibson Hummingbird; also the higher-end imports like the Blueridge and Recording King dreads. All were solid wood, all had roughly the same kind of set-ups (strings, etc.). And yet the tone varied widely -- to my ear the D55 was the most balanced, the D35s were probably the sweetest, followed by the D28's (which were amazingly consistent), followed by the RK's (amazing sound for the money). But I played some high-end dreads that looked great but sounded like cigar-box banjos.

It's gotta be the wood. All other things being equal, the quality of the wood will always tell. I was very amazed at how good the Recording King models sounded, them being Asian imports. The Martins and Guilds were better, but also about twice as expensive. The wonderful part of living in this age is that you can get a hell of a good guitar for not much money.
