Hello, I am writing a piece for a publication which will feature Allen Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd. One of the guitars I will be highlighting is a white Guild S300 that he played on stage during the Rossington Collins Band years. He used this guitar on the second RCB tour on Misery Loves Company. His guitar tech replaced the pickups with 2 Gibson PAFs and rewired it for the volume controls to be on top. If there is anyone on this board who worked at Guild at the time and remembers this endorsement it would be cool to get their perspective as a part of this piece. I will post pictures here at some point of the guitar.

Welcome. I would see whether Drumbob chimes in. He did work for Guild and has some endorsement stories but I think he might have been at Guild a bit later. Looking forward to the pics.

If you take the Guild pick-ups out of it is it still a Guild? It may look like a Guild but it won't sound like a Guild. Which is more important; Looks or Sound?

It's kind of like original Band members, how many can be replaced and still be the same band?

Also I have this cool pic that shows off the band with their Guilds, though I don't think it helps you much:

Somewhere I have a Guild list of endorsees, too. At least I think I do...

That's a great picture! Not often that you see a southern rock band playing hair metal guitars!

If you replaced a S300 HB1's with PAF's would it typically sound like a S300D?
M

Maybe in the neck since the pickup there is a '59 PAF, but the bridge is a Super Distortion on the -D S300s, so I'd think the PAFs would be closer to the HB1s than that.

I'll have to compare the tone of the bridge pickup on my gold top Bluesbird against a guitar with a DiMarzio SD. Unfortunately I don't have two Bluesbirds to do a fair comparison. (Almost bought a nice quilted maple top Bluesbird on eBay this afternoon but I got a call and was distracted from the auction!)

After this I read this post yesterday, I spent like 30 mins researching Lynyrd Skynyrd via Wiki and about Allen Collins. He did the solo guitar work on both Freebird and Simple Man, as well as co-wrote my other fave song by this band, Saturday Night Special. His guitar tone is awesome and powerful! He mostly played Gibson Firebirds in the beginning. The band got national fame when it opened for The Who's Quadrophenia tour in 1973. All stuff I did not know.

I'm sure that's Ronnie Van Zandt but maybe it really is Allen Collins. Anyway if you really look at that pick doesn't it look sort of like Zakk Wylde?

Unfortunately Ronnie Van Zant was dead at the time of this photo.

Yes, that picture of the Rossington Collins Band showed up in a 1982 (?) add for Guild strings and an add for Guild artists, also from 1982 as it looks. I have not seen it anywhere else, so don't know who owns the copyright, it might have been staged by Guild just for that purpose.
