Adam Schlesinger Gone.

This one hurts. Adam Schlesinger, co-founder of Fountains of Wayne, died today from COVID-19 at the age of 52. I first encountered his music in the wonderful Tom Hanks movie, That Thing You Do! Those infectious original pop songs were his compositions. Here’s the title track.

We (the entire family) saw Fountains of Wayne live four times – our daughters love their music as much as I do and still talk about the impression That Thing You Do! Made on them when they saw it as young girls in the theater.

Fountains of Wayne ended badly – co-founder Chris Collingwood has issues with alcohol, got sober, and returned to a different band.

I know of few songwriting combinations that wrote such finely crafted songs including some wonderfully pop-sounding ones.

I enjoy playing their acoustic songs, including Hackensack, Michael and Heather At The Baggage Claim, Sick Day, Troubled Times. The tabs at Ultimate Guitar are pretty good. I'm gonna run through those tonight.

Also love FoW. Utopia Parkway was my intro to them. Not long after it came out I was on a work trip in Manhattan…rented a car for the day and drove into New Jersey just so I could see the Fountains Of Wayne "store."
