I posted some pics on this guitar a couple years back but I took it out and played on it a bit today and this is a really fine guitar. So, at the risk of being a bit redundant thought I'd share it again.

I always wanted a Custom Built guitar and on a trip up to NW Wisconsin, a few years back, where I was born and raised, I saw this woodworking shop in a town about 10 miles away from where I was born. I stopped in and talked with the guy who also turned out to be a Luthier and guitar builder and we had a fine time. Turns out we were close in age and we both played in R&R bands that played at the various local venues back in the day. While we were talking he mentioned that John Beland of the Flying Burrito Brothers (and more groups), and also a sought after session musician in Nashville and elsewhere, now lived in the area and often came in to chat. I was hoping to meet him but he didn't stop in that day. He did, however, send me an autographed picture of him and a couple of his CD's which I thought was pretty cool of him.

I ended up buying one of his guitars. He only makes a few a year now and the one I bought was made for a gent who unfortunately passed away before he could pick the guitar up. So, I bought it.

It's really a great sounding guitar and a quality build. It's made of ancient Kauri Wood found in the swamps of New Zealand and has a COA stating the wood is guaranteed (and carbon dated) to be somewhere between 30,000 and 50, 000 years old. It's very light and really resonant and the sound is unique and superb.

Anyway, thought I'd share and here's a few pics for you as well. I especially like the back and the Rosette.

Richard that is a beautiful guitar and loved the background story. Would you share what strings you have on it?

It has Elixer strings on it now and I am not at all a fan of that brand. It's what I had on hand last time I changed strings. When it's time I'll slap on a set of D'Addario or GHS strings. But, I seldom change strings until I break one of them, then I change them all.

Thanks and the age of the wood is literally from the "Stone Age." That is some rare wood!

Wow!!!! Carbon dates to 30,000 plus years. I’m looking for a Les Paul that carbon dates to 1957-1959

so tell us more about the voice...does it compare to rosewood, mahogany, maple???

I hope you brake a string yesterday - or immediately - then put on strings of your choice - and write a review - with sound clip.

Great story!

carbon dated... to be somewhere between 30,000 and 50, 000 years old.

That is amazing. Carbon dating is indeed accurate going back 50,000 years. Older samples require other radiometric elements.

While we were talking he mentioned that John Beland of the Flying Burrito Brothers... now lived in the area and often came in to chat....

I never met anyone from that group, but the gorup I was in was fortunate to use their equipment at a benefit for Phil Kaufman who had some legal expenses after absconding with Gram Parson's body and cremating it in Joshua Tree National Park. 😲

I did meet blues singer Ciaran Wells at that benefit, and we became regulars at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood on Thursdays for quite a while. Our guitarist at the benefit did quite a bit better by meeting someone who hooked him up with Etta James, for whom he was guitarist and musical director for the next 10 years.

Benefits and be beneficial!
