IN response to 5thumbs' suggestion, here:

Well, I definitely don't qualify: I started mine in 1972!

How about a general "beard" thread? That could be interesting.
ZZ Top references would abound in that thread.

From here:
I said: "Terry, just noted a new avatar. You haven't shaved since the start of the pandemic, have you? :D "

And proceed to post #28 ;)

Yeah beards have had a hard time living down that pirate thing.

And then there's these guys who wouldn't even shave their guitars

And let's face it, would you buy a used guitar from this man?

But I do miss being able to show off my tie collection.

OK, I'll play. I'm still teaching, so I like to keep my beard trimmed, and more importantly my wife is much happier when I do. It's a little ragged on this Saturday morning.

And while we are at it, here's my hair before I got my first haircut after the pandemic hit. Category 2 hurricane (or a bird's nest, take your pick!).

And just to link it back to the DNA thread, here's a photo of my late father, including a beard. Clearly, hair is genetic.

I can never get past the first 3 weeks. Of growing a beard. But gonna try to go till end of September without shaving. If I can go 4 weeks, maybe I can get over the hurdle.

Ambrose E. Burnside. Not Covid related. He is generally credited as the reason some beards (and facial hair) are now called sideburns instead of mutton chops. No Guild content but he was both Governor of and Senator from Rhode Island a few decades before Guild moved to Westerly.

Double points for a general's beard in a general beard thread.

My wife won't let me get all facial hair on parade at all. I'm not that put off by that. I'd be afraid of how much older I would look with one. I suspect it would come in mostly a grey color. It does get darn itchy when it get going. I wonder if there is a web site for " What you would look like with a beard ? " ? Use a web cam to get your face and base the beard color off high highlights.

Update: There appears to be an App for that. I'll report the results.

The Groomtribe app from Philips. Fun. It puts a beard on your face and keeps it there even if you move your face around. The wife found it funny on my face as well as hers.

I've had facial hair pretty much since my first year at college ('66). Most often a full beard, occasionally trimmed or just a mustache. About ten years ago I went clean shaved because my facial hair was mostly a non-descript grey and I didn't like the way it looked (my scalp hair was still mostly brown for some reason). Strangely, after my chemo related depilation, my hair returned with a hew changes. First, my scalp hair, previously strait as an arrow, now has some curls, and my beard lost its gray and is once again brown, so I am back to a full beard and mustache!

I pretty much never shaved my upper lip.

Long haired, parka-clad,13 years old and walking to a friend's house one winter day, I passed a mother and small child walking in the opposite direction and heard as they passed behind me, "Mom! Mom! Was that a boy or a girl???"

Never shaved my upper lip again.

Added a goatee about 20 years ago which added a certain luciferous aspect to my countenance, according to She Who Must be Obeyed.

Since my beard and moustache started to grow I only once shaved them completely. What an enourmous mistake. Can't remember why I did it. Anyway - I went to friends place - he opens the door and bursts into laughter - her wife did the same. I spent maybe an hour there - not much conversation because they both were just hysterical. 😂 lesson learned 😏

I haven't cut my hair since the heart attack a little over three years ago, and I've only trimmed damaged and uneven ends on the beard since the Fall of 2016.
If I could play Bass, I'd consider an audition for the vacancy with ZZ TOP! 😂
I'm the right age too!

Me neither.

I've shaved mine about 8 or 9 times since the start of Covid, but the GF doesn't like it, says I look better without it, and actually she's right. It's kinda sparse and scraggly anyway.

Anyway, I now realize there's more than one reason they invented shaving, and this is one of them:

When I was a young man my friends and I would always grow beards for the Winter. It makes a lot of sense as it keeps your face warmer for the cold season. I then started setting dates. The last day I would shave would be for Thanksgiving Dinner. Then I would shave at Easter. But instead of removing the whole beard at once, I would remove it in sections. First it would go down to a Van Dyke, then just a mustache, and then finally clean shaven. I would also let my hair grow for the winter with just a trim at Christmas. When you look at one of our photo albums you can always tell what time of year it is by my hair and beard!

When my beard began to turn gray I started dying it. The problem with that is the dye made my face itch like crazy for a week! I finally had enough of that and just let it go white!

This photo is from a couple of years ago:

This is from quite a few years ago in the Spring: (With Guild content!)

Karsh-004.jpg

Then some years I'd do something really fun: (Much to the chagrin of my wife! And more Guild content!)

Karsh-1.jpg

This past Winter since I lost all the weight I decided to give up the beard and long hair and stayed clean shaven and keep my hair relatively short:

Then as I always do in the Summer, I go with a buzz cut. Here is a recent photo:

As it stands right now, I think the Winter beard will be a thing of the past!

One cold January, when I lived in Nova Scotia, for some unremembered reason I shaved my full beard. I immediately went into a clothing store and bought a scarf.
