Look closely Dane, I think you'd have to do extensive work on the neck before you ever attempted a reset.

It certainly looks like somebody took exception to this guitar. I would love to find wrecks like this in the UK. I could spend a happy hour or two making them live again. The neck looks to have trussrod problems as well as the fretboard snapped off. I am surprised that the neck joint looks so rough. The dovetail looks like it was hacked into shape and the body pocket looks like it was lacquered before fitting. The glue seems to have been splatted in. Does anybody know if this is typical of Guild neck jointing?

Not quite typical.

There's usually a sizable shim (or two) as well ; >)

Hi Hide,Yes I would have expected a better fit and much more joint damage considering the neck was removed by force. The glue only seems to be on the face of the dovetail(and thick) where it contacts the block. I am sure I remember a thread where one of the ex-Guild members explained how difficult it was to become a neck fitter. Maybe this was just one that got through. How typical is the size of the dovetail? There is some recent discussion on neck re-sets and how some luthiers are refusing to re-set Guild necks because of the variation in the size and depth of the joint. This dovetail looks pretty average in size and I would be happy to remove a neck with this joint which seems to be just like any Martin one in size.
