I completely forgot to close the loop on this thread. In the end the repair went perfectly and I’ve been happily playing this guitar ever since the repair. My homemade preamp has worked wonders and sounds great; the battery lasts more than long enough and all’s well that ends well.
In fact I thought I’d never need another acoustic guitar again (I hear y’all laughing in the peanut gallery) until just the other day I found a 2022 sunburst D-55E for sale locally…
…I’m going to go check it out on Thursday. Let’s hope my luthier doesn’t split it in two
