Hi

I've seen a nice 1987 X-170 that I'm very interested in but the case has no Guild logo on it. The seller 'thinks' its original. Was there ever a period, specifically 1987 really, where Guild didn't put the logo on the case?

Thanks!

That's not a Guild case.

I thought that may be the case (pun intended!), Thanks for confirmation. I might still go for it though as it looks like a great guitar at a good price. Could always get a Guild case for it another time.

That is a glorious guitar! Price is a bit high especially without a Guild case (that you may never find) but damn that’s nice.

I agree it doesn't seem like a Guild case. But with five visible latches I have to wonder if it is an upgrade or better case than the original Guild case?

Honestly, that guitar looks so beautiful I'd be tempted to not care about the case, especially since that does seem like a nice case.

If you haven't seen it, here's my review of my '94. This is the only other one I've seen in that beautiful burst in the years I've been watching. Mine has a beautiful tone and the most useful tone controls of any guitar I've ever owned and I don't know why since I never pulled the harness.

And I hate every one of those pictures. All taken before I got my nice studio lights. Grumble...

Wow! That is a beauty! The case looks nice, but the guitar is awesome!

Why did Guild always do such a terrible job of dressing fret ends?

That thing is really minty, but I've seen a lot of super clean, well figured X-170s trade closer to the $1,200-1,400 range. Granted, some of them were from the post-HB-1 era.

I'm going to shoot am offer of £1300 and see what the seller says. Over here in the UK prices on these seem to be around £1700-£1900 so if I could get it for around £1300 I'd be really happy with that.

A Guild case from this era would have blue interior, and the Guild script logo. I had an X-170 from the same era. But, you’re not buying the case, you’re buying the guitar. The case does look too deep for an X-170, it should not drop down like that.
And I agree that the fret dressing and stress patterns in the binding in the fret ends is not great. Other than that, it’s a beauty.

It's hard to tell from the single photo, but I'd make sure that the case isn't too deep. It looks like it might be about 1/2 inch. Not a deal breaker as you can put a folded towel under the body. Possibly even remove the lining, add a little foam and glue it all back together.

Or, it might just be an illusion...
