Be careful with the fret wire, Lono. You may need to replace it, and I think to do that you need to compress the wire with special pair of pliers to pull it out without damaging the fretboard slot. If it needs replacement and leveling, you might consider bringing it to a tech / luthier for that. Frank Ford's website mentions a few diagnostics, but I don't know if he shows how to remove frets or not... http://www.frets.com/FretsPages/Luthier/Technique/Frets/FretTrouble/frettrouble.html

Thank you! That's a great resource. Gives me a lot to read through and learn.

Currently the loose fret is only impacting the F# on the 14th fret, as the floating 15th makes it sound as a G. I'm planning on playing the guitar for a couple weeks to see if any other problems present, but then I'll probably take it to a luthier for fixes.

^ Yeah, to be clear, those frets look pristine, and I'm sure Ralf's advice is right-on. But just be careful to avoid pulling *up* on them to remove them without proper gear or you could damage the slot. That's all I was getting at. :) Best wishes, Lono!

Thanks for the welcome! I appreciate your concern. While naphtha is a solvent, so is water. I started using naphtha based on the advice of some touring techs and luthiers I know. According to them it's pretty widely used, and based on my observations I've found that to be true. I've never had any trouble using naphtha for cleaning lacquer. I've also never heard of anyone else having any problems while using it.

My pre-Guild guitar experience is mostly limited to solid-body electrics. Currently I own nitrocellulose finished guitars made by Fender, Gibson, K-Line, and Leclair. They've all gotten the naphtha wipe down.

I've used the Martin polish before. It works really well. I currently prefer the Lizard Spit variety for the longevity of the polish I get.

Here are some post-cleaning photos. It shined up pretty nice!
Good to know! I've used it working on solid body paint jobs, but putting it on an acoustic isn't in my experience. Good to know it works.

Carry on!

HEY!!!!!! I'm 98% sure this is my old guitar that I bought brand new (ordered) from Marshall Music in East Lansing, MI. I bought it in 1974 and sold it at Upfront Guitar in Traverse City in either late 1978 or early 1979. I'd love to talk to you about this guitar. It has (had?) a very distinct damage to the upper bout from a capo that was thrown to me resulting in a 2 or 3mm ding in the finish. It's a great guitar. I traded it in for an Alvarez Yairi, but I've often wondered where this guitar ended up. I have been playing Taylor Guitars for the last 25 years.
Contact me: Steve Paxton, Ludington, MI 231-233-3119. We'll go down memory lane about this instrument.....it's a good one.

Lono, if you are still in the TC area I'd love to meet with you and see and play this guitar if you wouldn't mind. I get up to the TC area frequently. I can probably give you a little more information about this instrument. I will not pressure you at all to sell it, but if you decide to sell it, I'm interested in buying it back after 43 years.

Anybody know how I can contact Lono about this particular guitar? I have info about it that he may be interested in.
You could send him a private message, called a "conversation" here. Click on his profile and a box will come up with a button on the bottom that says, "Start Conversation" and you're off and running!!
