Hi all, first thread here as I'm about to receive an original S-100 Guild from 1973.
Of course I love Soundgarden / Kim Thayil :) but that's not the reason I ordered it. I'm a Strat guy but wanted something different with a bit higher output, original, with character, with a vintage voicing, without going to the obvious: Gibson. Which some are great but do not attract me that much generally speaking (even though I like some SG's).
It will need some luthier work as the below crown inlay is missing and the pickups are not original ones (DiMarzio zebras with original pickup ring, no cover) and the knobs aren't original ones either.
Bought it thinking that it could be possible to find replacement pickups with relative ease.... My mistake.
The classic knobs are kind of easy to find but the HB-1 pickups, originals, are very rare, hard to find and extremely pricey. Just saw ones, from 1974, in ebay few days ago at 600 US... disappeared quickly.
I would like to kow if people here could recommend me, meanwhile I don't find/buy original or early 90's HB-1's, a pair of pickups as an alternative that could be in the same vibe as the originals, not too high gain type, chimey etc and that could be applied to the original wiring scheme in order to be able to use the out of phase switch.
I'm also aware of the specific dimensions of the original pickup rings, another thing to take into account, as I would prefer to use a pickup cover and I'd rather avoid drilling new holes.
Is there a model of pickups compatible with these specs out there? I remember trying the HB-1's in the Korean versions. Interesting for a cheaper guitar but I wasn't blown away and apparently these are not compatible with the phase switch the vintage ones sports. I've made some research but it seems difficult to find a compromise. Thought about the SD antiquities humbuckers or the Fullertron's, higher output 'Trons Gretsch family. Could these be used with a phase switch?
Kind of Guild noob questions, I'm new in this world, as I said, Strat person.
Thank you for any suggestions.
Regards,
Thomas

Hello Thom,

Welcome! I could help you out with some period correct ones at a somewhat better price. I do not know where you are located, but I'm located in the Netherlands, so shipping might be costly.
If you're interested, just get back with me through my website!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust
