1971 Princeton Rev w 12" Orange/Red JBL D-120 speaker. Anybody using this combination?

Hey, Guys, I did some trading yesterday and wound up with the above mentioned gear. Gear weighs about 38lbs. That's a lot of poundage, now that I'm 69 yoa!!

So my big question is, do any of you play any combination of speaker and amp like this? Jam with if? Gig with it? What can you tell me?

I don't have any pics yet. I'll set some up when I get them this week.

I have a PR with an Eminence Allasandro SC64 12”. Different speaker, but I think the PR sounds much better with a 12” speaker. It’s a great gig rig, plenty loud for any gig you don’t need to mike.
I used to have a 12” JBL DF120 in my Deluxe Reverb. Clean, loud, and bright city. Did I say loud?
i did like it, and used it for years, but I’m much happier with a different speaker. But, you might love it. It is a very good, detailed sounding speaker. Looking forward to your impressions.

Thanks, shihan. I've both seen and heard that Prince-Rev/JBL speaker before at a jam. It was wonderful. Sort of a, "wow, where did that come from?" kinda sound. I had to look around my friend's man cave until I figured out where that particular sound was coming from!

Now, how that's that's gonna work out in the long run on a 38lb amp, I'm not sure, but it will be fun finding out. gilded

I know nothing about guitar amps, but I know I had an epiphany when I blew up the OEM speaker on my Hartke Kickback 12, and replaced it with an Eminence Basslite on Larry Hartke's recommendation. Very geezer friendly!

JBL D120F is the perfect speaker for a BF Deluxe Reverb, speaking from experience, as I used that rig for years.
It just sounds great. I stopped because the JBL weighs a lot these days, I have a lighter speaker in there now, a Weber Chicago, which is enough lighter to pass the pounds test.
I was not able to find a neo speaker I liked, most of them have a peak in an uncomfortable spot.
(I do have a Jensen neo in a 6G6B combo I built, and that works well.)
I would imagine that a D120F in a Princeton would sound terrific.
JBLs and Fender amps work well together, and I believe we Have Dick Dale to thank for that.

If you plan on turning the amp above 4, there are probably better choices for speaker. But the speaker itself is great for certain sounds/amps, and worth quite a lot of money if it has the original cone.

I showed the amp to another longtime friend and he got so excited, I’m loaning it to him for a couple of weeks. When I get it back, another amigo and I are gonna take it apart, do some chassis pics and send them over to my brothers and sisters at LTG

as far as sound level goes, I have heard the amp at around volume four and found it wasn’t my go-to sound.
But who knows?

The speaker can certainly take it powerwise. But if the sound is not pleasing - then try something else.

That's an interesting speaker/amp pairing. Probably make for a great harp or keyboard amp. There will be little to no coloration from the JBL, which may or may not be a good thing depending on the music you play. And you may find the JBL to be somewhat bright.

My preference for the small Fender amps is a speaker with color and compression. This makes for a more bluesy voicing.

A JBL D120 is a pretty unique speaker of course, also a little bit of overkill for a Princeton, and very heavy indeed.

I like Jensen's NeoTornado speakers a lot with Fenders - they weigh next to nothing, are efficient, don't turn the amp into something radically different.

It'll probably be slightly underwhelming in direct comparison with the JBL for clean tones (what wouldn't?), but it will definitely sound sweeter overdriven. Nice allround speaker with the added benefit of stupid light weight for the power handling and efficiency.

I have a Tornado Neo in a 6G6B combo I built and it sounds good and saves some pounds.
In my BFDR I have a Weber Chicago, which is not super light weight but does sound quite good.

That '71 PR to me seems like an excellent find....if you get it dialed in you might love it.

I have a '69 Princeton Reverb and '69 Princeton Amp (no reverb).....if I ever get around to selling off my old amps these two would stay.
Absolute favorites.

I have a 12" baffle installed in the in PR.....and currently love it with a '63 C-12Q.
Sounds great around the house but probably would break up earlier when needed in a higher volume gigging situation.
Somebody might like to push that C-12Q.....but I like a clean sound and still get a lot out of it.
I live in the woods and it gives me all the volume I need......and the Katydids keep on singing.

The Princeton Amp has a '65 C-10N installed and sounds wonderful.....
I had a Celestion Gold 10 in it that was great, and may end up putting the 10" baffle back in the PR and use it there.

Admittedly I went a bit overboard choosing speakers for these but well worth it!

A Celestion gold in a Princeton is bliss! The 10 sounds exactly like a 12, minus the quicker response of the cone size. Great speakers
