I'm taking Daryl's advice and delving into my M75 work in progress. I have a few better pictures here that highlights the finish and updates.

The refinish was done by Classic Ax in Nashville, who did a fine job. I'm not sure what the original color was, since I bought it in an un-finished state. But it was likely a solid color (black?) since the back appears to be a 2-piece. They also made a complete headstock overlay since the old one was trashed. New grovers, and a newly cut pickguard (traced from the M65) were added. The pickup covers and harp were re-plated. Should have worked on the covers a little bit since there is some oxidation on them. She looks great and feels great. The only issue I have is the pickups. They seem to be loud enough but they are quite microphonic. That is they seem to amplify every every touch of the strings, much like tapping a microphone. That drives me crazy. Also, they don't seem to deliver the type of Blues tone I am looking for, as the Franz in my M65 (overdriven sound on a tube amp). Of course that just may be a characteristic of the guitar itself. Even though it is structurally similar to the M65, I can tell it is quite different in terms of top wood, appointments and workmanship. And it could be the M75 is more suited to jazz.
Given my search for tone I am considering changing out the pickups. I am sure that is a topic that has probably been discussed at length here. The mini buckers appear to be difficult to replace without cutting bigger holes of a standard humbucker. That would open up several choices, including HB sized P90s I have seen discussed here. Since P90s were on the original Aristocrat, I wonder if anyone has experience with that model and its sound. Daryl suggested I consult with the experts here before I make any rash decisions.

Given the location of the seam on the back I would think you're correct in it originally being a solid color. But the spruce on the top is very nice! Not something I would want to cover.

There's some great info here on wax potting microphonic pickups. Definitely worth a shot & checking everything else under the hood while you're at it. I have an all maple, fully hollow '71 BB with the full sized HB-1's & I'd say it's one of the most versatile guitars I have.

just took les paul humbuckers out of my aristocrat.
replaced them with single coil p-90's (trying to get it back to the original)

my advice to you if you put different ones in is make sure the pickup poles complement the string spacing.
whoever put the les paul humbuckers in my aristocrat before I bought it totally missed the fact that the poles didn't line up with the strings, not so much at the neck position but at the bridge. this totally took the wind out of the tone.

the singlecoil lindy fralin p-90's really put the scream back in, and they humbuck when you bridge them.

is your guitar the hollow or solid body?

Wow. That is a nice looking guitar. The refinish looks very good. I beleive you have one of the very early reissue M75 Bluesbirds. According to Hans the early reissue Bluesbirds were made from unused Aristocrats so that explains the back not having binding. Those mini humbuckers sound pretty good when cranked so your guitar sounds like Guild intended. I owned an early Bluebird many years back. I didn't care for the sound of the mini humbuckers with the hollowbody M75. However my tastes have since expanded and I sure would love to pick up one of the early M75 Bluesbirds with the minibuckers.

I think you'll have a hard time replacing those pickups without at least a little bit of wood-work on the guitar, there are no straight retrofits for those that I know of.

That said, my friend Mischa had vintage vibe pickups, if I recall correctly, custom-build some single coil pickups that were very "P90" that fit the mini-humbucker rings, that's always an option too..

Steve,
I was thinking the same thing. Search the LTG for wax-potting, and you'll get some detailed how-tos.
