Serial # 30118, early variation with fan bracing, 1-3/4” nut, and 2-1/4” string spacing at bridge. 25-1/2” scale. I bought it a year ago, and while it had little playwear, it did need some repairs. The bridge was lifting, and it had a headstock crack. Both had been ineptly ‘repaired’, plus shellac had been brushed onto the neck shaft.
My repairs:
-bridge reglue
-neck reset
-epoxy reglue of neck crack(it is visible, but solid, been so for a year now)
- removed the shellac from the neck shaft(which removed the lacquer), refinished the shaft with stain and gloss lacquer
-reprofiled the flat fingerboard to a 12” radius, and full refret with wire to match original(.080”w x .050”T). Again, someone had ineptly and heavily filed down the frets by the nut, requiring a refret.
- new bone saddle
- new correct bridge pins
- remove curling, shrinking pickguard(causing top distortion and one crack), sealed bare wood on top, and readhered p-guard with double-faced adhesive
-replaced original open faced Grover tuners with matching, high quality Gotoh repros
-light gauge (12-54) PB strings
- action at 12th fret: 5/64” bass, 4/64” treble; relief .005”; saddle height 1/8-9/64”.
- light weight, 4lbs 4oz.
- good condition flattop HSC
It sounds great, both finger style and flatpicked!
$2000 plus shipping.
I am a full time repairman, in Vermont: I have a FB page, David Richard Luthier, where I post photos and videos of instruments I have built or repaired.
