I thought there was one VERY similiar to this listed on eBay a while back , but had the dual Dearmond floating pickup setup? as to the "Special" designation? Same guitar?

Paging Hans Moust....

Hello JazzWest,

Same guitar!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

So (Hans) essentially this AA was ordered originally with the dual Dearmond floating pickup assembly (ala Johnny Smith Double Setup) and received a "Special/Custom" designation? The existing Guild records indicate this?

Sadly looks like the dual assembly is MIA....I wonder if the current owner has the orig pickguard (should be notched for the rear pickup) and extra controls?

Wow 60s Artist Award for a darn good price, even later AA typically commands about $4500! Anyone compared the AA to something similar with carved tops like one of those Heritage Golden Eagles made by former Gibson folks?

I have taken closer look at the listing and is that a headstock crack? That's probably why it's priced so attractively....

Well the seller also had listed in a seperate auction a D'Angelico tailpiece that I believe was on this Award one time (eBay auction). So I asked about the originality of the current tailpiece and if there was indication of another mounted on previously? I asked this of the seller at the time of the previous time it was listed and and stlil presisting on the current auction. He in fact only mentions the crack thats not a crack and avoided the topic of the pickups and tailpiece.

FYI - When this Award was first listed originally on eBay some time ago, it had two Dearmond 1000s pickups and a D'Angelico Tailpiece mounted and NO mention or signs of a headstock crack. Now it's back , relisted by this current? owner w/stock Guild engraved tailpiece (correct) missing a pickup, and a headstock crack. I think he has restored the instrument, kept the additional Dearmond and it "playing it safe". But the "Custom" truss rod covers tells it all!

Daryl, I googled around trying to find a picture of one, but came up with bupkus. I have seen something like a "Double Floating DeArmonds" on other guitars, though. Usually, there's the usual floating neck pickup, attached with a bracket to the side of the neck and another to the pickguard, and then to attach the bridge pickup there's a long rod extending from the bracket on the neck. This holds one side of this second bridge pickup up off the top, and it's also attached to the pickguard. Looks pretty geeky, IMHO. I think you need to wear a suit and tie when you play one of these guitars, and if you play anything other than straight jazz on it, the whole thing explodes. If I can find a photo, I'll post one.

Hey Daryl,

Yah, one would assume so. Now I'm wondering if I imagined the whole thing, but I don't think so. You can see a regular Rhythm Chief here on eBay:

See the bar thing that runs all the way down to the tailpiece? I'm pretty sure I've seen a two-pickup model, but again, my brain ain't what it used to be...

I'll keep my eyes pealed. Or maybe I'll email the guys at Archtop.com. They seem to be pretty authoritative.

Hey, wait a minute. Did he run away to Germany and call himself Krysh?

Don't think so; BUT my third son, the father of our grand-daughters has run away to Australia "thinking" that he's gay !!

He probably now answers to the name Darlene.

It's a wacky world !!
