Hello Guild Lovers,

I have a nice 1960 Guild X-350B that is in need of some parts. Missing are the golden plastic tone knob with chrome sheild and three of the white push-buttons. The push-buttons I have are the T, TM, and the M, so I need the others. Everything else is original except the tuners and the finish. All the electronics are original, including the heavily oozed caps and crusty pots. Any advice on replacement caps and wiring diagrams would be helpfull. I'm not going for a total restoration here. This is a family heirloom and will stay that way. The guitar plays well and looks great. It just needs a little sprucing up.

You can clean the pots w/ any electronic contact cleaner; use the lubricating type.

Can you read the value on the side of the caps? Vintage 'bumble-bee' tone caps are available on the web however there's no guarantee that they haven't already drifted out of tolerance; nothing like paying a premium for a cap that doesn't work very well.

There are several types/brands of modern equivalents...and everyone who fools with them has an opinion on which one sounds 'best'...whatever that is.

Welcome Pizzapatrol and Good luck!

I don't know your guitar, but for the sake of the thread, here are two diagrams for humbuckers:
Single humbucker + Vol and Tone
http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WDUH01101
Twin humbuckers plus 2 Vol and 2 Tone
http://www.blueguitar.org/new/schem/_gt ... iphone.gif

Each of these uses a .02uf tone cap; there are others that use .05uf. The .02 will let through more high frequency a/k/a hash/raspiness where the .05 will let through less high frequency...produce a 'cleaner' sound.

What to buy:
Polystyrene, polypropylene, ceramic: you get to pick the 'flavor'

Where to buy:

Hey Hideglue,

Nice little bag of goodies you have there! I have the T, TM, and M. I don't know enough to know which ones I'm missing because I've never seen another one in person. There should be six though. What do you want for those little gems?

Hi Tyrone,

Check out ebay for the knob you are looking for. There is currently a vintage knob that matches your description on the listing for around $25. Additionally there is a NOS set of 2 Vol + 2 Tone listed with a BIN of $24. If you want an era correct part you might have to pay $50+ for the single knob.
