Enjoying a Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA on a perfect New England fall afternoon. It’s a whopping 15.3% alcohol so just splitting one 12 oz. bottle between us is enough to get a buzz. Super concentrated, intense flavors and almost port like. They only make it in the fall and it sells out quickly even at a crazy $ 35-40 a 4-pack. A super nice yearly treat if you like this kind of thing.

Canada .... brrr
I grew up in Germany where they have traditional Eisbock beer. For that the beer gets partially frozen, and as alcohol freezes at lower temperature there remains a core of more concentrated strong beer in a mantle of weaker residue that they extract and bottle. Wickedly good stuff but not something to drink daily.

Huh, I never knew that. Being a bit of an oenophile I’ve had and love eiswein, but didn’t know they also did something similar with beer. Definitely a treat for sure.

Dogfish Head first brewed World Wide Stout in the '90's to set the ABV record for beer, which it did, although it has since been broken. Usually clocks in between 15 and less than 20. I think my most recent bottles are labelled 18.

About 20% ABV is when the yeast die happy instead of fermenting more which means exceeding 20% requires special techniques. Last I checked the ABV record for beer was about 67% ABV. It was brewed at near freezing temperatures where the yeast could survive a little before the alcohol killed it. Seems to brewing was a several month process involving a lot of freezing and maybe even several strains of yeast.

120 Minute IPA and World Wide Stout have a lot of similarities considering lower ABV stouts and IPAs barely have any. Much of the flavor comes from the high alcohol and not the mash bill.

I will drink either when I find it on tap and go for WWW when both are available (which happens a couple of times a year).

Price in this market is a 4 pack of 12 ounce bottles for $45 minus some change.

I friend and I once made a Black and Tan by mixing a bottle of 120 and a bottle of WWW. it was very, very good but neither of us thought the mix was better than either beer alone.

If you are interested in taste and not the buzz most beers over 11% really taste different and the Double or Imperial version is not necessary the best tasting. But I'll drink all the WWW I can afford.

Thanks Frono, that’s very interesting. I will definitely be on the lookout for the WWS. A side-by-side tasting would be fun. What I love about the 120 is that the higher alcohol is not noticeable. There is no bite, just an explosion of flavors. Afterwards… when your toes start to tingle… that’s when you realize it!

Drinking beer that strong gives me a brutal headache on the side of my head.

My go-to when I want a strong beer - Founders Dirty Bastard, 8.5% Scotch Ale. Best fresh on tap, the brewery/bar is close to my house, I like to take home a growler.

15.3% is the legal blood alcohol reading for driving here in Australia.

Only kidding, glad it's not!
It's under 0.05 here.

I choose to believe that 15.3% blood alcohol is the only thing that deters the drop-bears...

That is a deadly ABV.
Lawson's Sip of Sunshine is 8% and caution is needed, though it is excellent. Comes in a pint.
Six Point Resin is 9%, and a single 12 oz can is a good buzz for both of us.
Two of either is night-night.

$240 for 24.5 Oz bottle, 28% alcohol,

Sam Adams bought Dogfish Head in case anyone missed that news. So far the usual claims of the new owner ruining the product hasn't come to my attention.

WWS is one of the reasons I have started doing the math on ABV and serving size instead of using the one beer = one glass of wine = one shot of liquor rule of thumb. That clearly gives the wrong impression.

It's my go to these days. Really prefer Ipswich IPA, but they don't distribute in CT any more. Meant to pick up a case when I was in MA last week and forgot 'til I got home!
My brother and his family are in Litchfield. He used to live near Ipswich, and one winter out East he gave me a couple IPAs , Ipswich. Really tasty. I drank too many however. Ouch.
