Hi Friends, Hey, I tried the tuning technique I read about the other day on this site. I tuned the D-412 down a whole step and capoed on the 2nd fret and wow, good sound and maybe some ease in fingering/chording. My question is: is it allright to leave the guitar this way or does it need more tension on the neck during storage? I appreciate any/all of your opinions. This site has become a regular for me. Thanks in advance. Limmy

Hey Limmy,

I leave mine tuned down as well. I have not heard of it causing problems, conversely I have heard of problems with them tuned up and left. But those are rare, expensive if it happens, but rare.

You may have to adjust the trus rods when you drop to d tuning.
Less tension will change the neck relief a bit.

If you don't adjust the neck relief, the playability of the guitar may change.
You may even get some fret buzzing.

Irregularity, is a bad thing ...
LTG can be highly irregular but everything seems to come out ok ... Sometimes I think the proof that the care and feeding of a guitar is mostly black art comes from the fact that, for every person who thinks they've forestalled, or will forestall, a neck job by tuning/storing down, there's another guy who says they've left their guitars at pitch for dumpty-dump years without a problem ... If this is true, then I don't see how relative string tension has anything to do with whether or not a neck job is ever needed.

Limmy,

With everybody chiming in, I will mention this one thing, and that is, if you keep your guitar in storage for a long time, say 4-6 months and beyond, then you should detune.

But if you play everyday (like you should!), or every other day, then just pop the capo off in between; don't leave it on. Sometimes these capos can leave a mark.
