    NUGD Newark St. Aristocrat Goldtop

I'm sure it would work but it will take longer and require more effort. I bet the final product would look great, though. I've been impressed with the work and mods you've done with your goldtop. You seem like a knowledgeable guy and I'm sure it will look great when you're done!

Bad choice of words on my part. I don't think the bridge pickup is hotter, it just sits closer to the strings on this guitar than what I've seen on any other electric I've owned, hence the stronger signal to the amp. The design with this Aristocrat just doesn't allow for pickup height adjustment...

To my ears the bridge pickup is still hotter due to it's being closer (still) to the strings. It's not a huge difference but if I were a gigging player I may not be 100% happy and would probably go back in and remove more wood. I'm still trying to decide if I'll keep the guitar. It's an awesome...

I removed @ 2mm of wood with a very sharp chisel. I worked slowly and carefully but it only took about an hour to complete. After I finished I used sandpaper to take away the roughness of the chisel marks. All said and done, I could probably remove a bit more than I did but I purposely stopped...

I have not.....yet! I am curious about the tone change that would occur and the original Aristocrat did use the wooden base. I also wonder if a wooden base would stay in place better when I do my Buddy Guy bends? I have learned that the non pinned bridge is not friendly to huge string bending...

May I ask where you sourced those pins filling the pick guard mounting holes? Can I get them from Guild? Looks much nicer than an open hole in the body. I'm not a fan of the pick guards on these either.

    A little late, but here's my '57 X-175 Manhattan

My goodness, that looks nice. And single volume/tone knobs as well, my dream control setup. Enjoy!

    NGD - Nightbird II

Lovely. Back in 1987 I recall a reviewer saying the Nightbird looks like what a high end electric would be if it existed in the 1920's & 30's. Very classy, I wish I had kept mine!

Here is the result of my little wood working project with my M-75. I removed @ 2mm of paint & wood with a sharp chisel and followed up with some sandpaper to knock off the rough edges. I can report that no gold paint was harmed in the process, at least to the top! I did not need to use a mallet...

    Other Interests

My other passion is cycling, mostly mountain biking but I own a road bike and a fat bike, which has 4" wide tires for floatation and traction in snow. Riding dirt trails while traveling/camping with my wife is our main activity for fun and fitness, although it's getting tougher to do this as we...

That Truarc bridge is gorgeous. How did you change the color? I love that look! I have also decided that I will go ahead and remove some wood at the bridge pickup mount in order to lower it by @ 2mm. I'll need to get a properly sharpened chisel before I do this work.

OK. It's been a couple of days after changing to the 11-48 strings and setup work. First thing, I'm not sure what I saw when I reported the 4mm gap on the low E, it's actually 2mm and that is after the string gauge change, truss rod adjustment and raising the bridge a bit. I attribute my...

It's not about the pole piece height, it's the fact that the pickup cover is so close. The pickup needs to be deep enough to allow me to raise the pole pieces to the correct spot.

Agreed. Still, I've only had the guitar a few days and don't want to do anything like that just yet.

String height from bottom of string to pole piece is 4mm at low E and 1.75mm at high E. Pole pieces on bridge pup are screwed in as far as possible.

As expected, lowering the bridge pup will require removing some wood from the mounting area. I'm not sure I'm willing to do that, even to an affordable import, at least not right now. I will try to get used to it as is and maybe alter my picking technique near the bridge. The pic shows the...

That's the plan. I'll get it set up properly before I do anything like wood removal.

Oh yes, a dremel will be used if needed. No hammer & chisel will come near this guitar! I'm not in a big rush to do anything to it but the strings are so close to the pickup my pick hits it when playing close to the bridge, which I like for certain things.
