    NGD 1964 Gretsch corvette

Feels like a cross between a SG and a melody maker with a dash of Gretsch quirks.

70’s Yamaha FG-580. The Cadillac of the FG line

Picked up at the pawnshop this afternoon for 4 bills and the action was still good. Solid top with what is rumored to be Brazilian rosewood B+S a lovely grain and I think the finish maybe nitro with the little checking lines. This thing has low end that hits like a loaded Mack truck

So did Guild ever send cease and desist letters to the Japanese manufacturers that we’re making copies?

We all hear about Gibson and possibly Martin going after Ibanez/Takamine/etc but did Guild ever take legal action against Takamine? I know Ibanez made a few Guild copies but it seems like Takamine was making more of them.

    NAD Silvertone 1482

Just scored this from GC a week ago. Such a raunchy little amp. The undersized power transformer and minimal filtering with a tube rec seems to give these a trashy version of a BF Fender Tremolux. I currently run both inputs dimed to really give it drive,

Anyone feel like the D-35 was Guild’s under appreciated redheaded step child of the line up?

I picked up my ‘74 D-35 about 3 years ago and even though I don’t see many people sing praises for them like the D-25’s and the DV-52’s not that both aren’t deserving of said praises as I own both and they’re both stellar in their own right it’s just for some reason out of my collection of...

Bought a box of random subminiature tubes.

Some 6418 low voltage pentodes used in military and hearing aid applications as well as some 5703WB’s which were used in a tube based Maxon overdrive pedal. Will get out the breadboard and see what I can come up with. They’re direct heated tubes so the cathode and the heater are one and the same...

Snagged a Epiphone Crestwood Custom RI

I’m a big Steve Marriott fan so these had been on my radar for a while now. I know it isn’t the lone P90 model like Marriott used but I figured this could be rigged to fit me better since I never got along with most single pickup guitars outside of a Gibson DC Jr that sounded amazing but the QC...

Paid a visit to the Austin Vintage Guitar shop (Lotta old Guilds)

Was traveling to Austin to see John McLaughlin play and thought I’d drop off at a vintage guitar store. Loads of rare Guilds in this place and to my shock got to play a D-100 and the D-130 that was topic of discussion in the group a few weeks back. Wasn’t a tonal dud as I was lead to believe but...

    Late 70’s Ovation Viper

Picked it up from the pawnshop it had been sitting in for almost 2 years. Set up was so poor it’s no wonder it sat forever. Ebony fretboard on this one.

Neat vid about a neck reset on a D-44

Looks like the later version with the maple back and sides as opposed to the pear wood.

Scored this ‘71 Princeton on FB Marketplace for $80

Got this 1971 Silverface Princeton non reverb off Facebook marketplace for $80. A guy found it in his attic and wanted it gone and had no idea if it worked. Has the original tag and what I believe to be an aftermarket JBL K110 speaker which leads me to believe maybe a pedal steel player had it...

Why isn’t birch used much in the manufacturing of guitars anymore?

This is a question that’s been going around in my mind a bit and more so after I had bought a 40’s Regal mini jumbo. It’s a weird phenomenon because it seems after Harmony’s American factory in Chicago went under in 1974-6 it seems like almost nobody used birch on guitars anymore. Granted it...

Snagged an old 40’s Regal mini jumbo.

An oxymoronic statement but I don’t really know how else to describe this shape other than being a cross between a OOO and a jumbo. Pretty much a copy of a Kalamazoo KG11 from what I gathered possibly made by Lyon and Healy.

    New tuners on the D-35

Probably not the thing to do on a 50 year old guitar but I never liked the original tuners that came with the guitar. Hard to explain why because they hold tune decently enough but I hated the sharp ends on key heads so I swapped them out for Grover Statites this morning. Was able to reuse the...

Replacing handle on 70’s Guild case for my G-37?

As the title suggests on the original case for my ‘77 G-37 the handle is completely gone. The brass hardware that attaches to the case is there but the handle itself is entirely gone. From what I see this looks to be a common thing on old 70’s Guild cases. It’s too structurally sound to just...

Built a fuzz based around a LM311 comparator for hard edged square wave sounds,

As the title suggests I was inspired by a Craig Anderton comparator fuzz I breadboarded while I was off for 2 weeks because of COVID. I always wanted to make another attempt at it with an actual comparator chip as the CA design used a single opamp. I toyed around with the idea this week and even...

Weird tube preamp experiment with 12v space charge tubes.

As the title suggests I purchased 3 NOS 12AJ6 low voltage 12v tubes made to be used in car radios and since car radios have long since gone solid state and the collector value of the radios these were used in appears to be nonexistent they are quite cheap. I built a basic gain stage this weekend...

    NGD Guild DV-52

Snagged a DV-52 off reverb this morning after jonesing for a rosewood back and sides model for a while and watching the used DV-52’s. Ebony fretboard too if I’m not mistaken and still quite the deal in the current vintage market. I can’t seem to decipher the serial number though I heard they get...

Bought my old 92’ D-4 back today

as the title states I bought an old D-4 back that I had sold 2 years ago and regretted shortly after but this morning when I stopped by a pawnshop and saw my old D-4 sitting on the rack that had been sitting there for about a year with them asking about $500. Well this morning it had been marked...

Jerry Jeff Walker with a rather peculiar Guild

Has anyone seen this ad with Jerry Jeff? I watched a video interview with Ray Wylie Hubbard on Otis Gibbs’ channel where he mentioned Jerry traded him a weird “15 fret Guild” for some guitar he had which had me searching to see if there’s any pics of it. Turned up with this.
