Restaurants, bars consider turning off music as licensing fees skyrocket

Almost. If the performer is a member of ASCAP or BMI, the venue still has to pay them before you can play your music. So they can hire you to play original music as long as you're not a member of a performing rights organization.

Restaurants, bars consider turning off music as licensing fees skyrocket

I couldn't get past the pay wall, so I Googled the article title. Among other things, I found this thread — a real eye-opener, at least for me: Club owners compare notes on Reddit

For Lovers of Books and Technology

Too much fun! We had a Multilth and a 360 in the print shop where I used to work. The Multi was usually broken down, so I almost always used the 360. Always wanted to get my hands on a Heidelburg somewhere, but no such luck. I trained a guy on the 360 but forgot to tell him to tie back his...

Restaurants, bars consider turning off music as licensing fees skyrocket

Yup. I worked in a big box store, a Pier 1, for a while. The music was battery acid on my brain: Britney/Mariah/Beyonce/Tears for Fears — field-tested shopping motivators. It made every eight hours seem like a hundred. When Christmas was rolling 'round, it got worse. I started hearing "Last...

What's a PRO? (“The growing proliferation of PROs and their lack of transparency have made it increasingly difficult to offer music in our establishments,”)

    I've tried all the others

I did. And my Strats. Better guitars for less money. Meanwhile, I'm standing my ground: I still say you need a Tele, too.

    Why consign?

That's what I like about it. Selling it is suddenly someone else's problem. . . . in which case you get paid for it. Where I've done it, they don't take lowball offers without my permission. Yup! Hm. I've never run into that. I don't know how anyone can determine whether it's a loss. But...

Great choices, but you know you need a Tele, too.

    Why consign?

Yeah, that's important, Chaz. Every store has a different policy.

    Why consign?

I tell them the floor — the minimum I want them to sell it for. I don't think I ever got exactly the floor. I've just gotten the agreed percentage. I think it's always been more than the floor. But don't quote me, it's been a while.
  11. Charlie Bernstein

    Why consign?

The selling price. You set the floor. They don't go below your floor without asking you. Say you tell them to sell it for at least $1,000 so you'll get at least $750. Someone offers them $800. Since that's below your floor, the store calls you and asks you if that's okay. If you say no, then...

    Why consign?

That's the trade-off. Yes. No. A percentage is a percentage.

    Why consign?

    It's just easy. Yes. Yes.

A pretty incredible first take, Jerry Garcia on pedal steel

The whole album is 100% Garcia on instruments and vocals anf Bill Kreutzman on drums. All the lyrics are Robert Hunter's. All the singing is Jerry, multi-tracked. Bill McIntyre forced the band to learn to harmonize. And lose the rest of the side of one of the greatest albums of all time? Hands...

A pretty incredible first take, Jerry Garcia on pedal steel

Yeah, gotta love it! It's Jerry's best-known pedal steel piece. He said they all loved that studio because there were always great players coming and going to sit in with.

    Purchased Tuner vs an Ap?

Heh heh. They'll have better luck Googling tuning fork and pitch pipe. (Though I do like your portmanteau!) I always liked tuning forks better. More accurate, more fun. I have a couple of TC Electronics Polytunes — one pedal and one clip-on. Highly happy with them. TC beats Snark and D'Addario...

    Good point. Worth considering.

    Acceptable for Bluegrass Fest Jams?

You might get few silent groans for Wagon Wheel.* I'd wait for someone else to start it. Cumberland Blues and Deep River might be too tricky for some of the others, so gauge the skill level of your group before using them. Other than that, that list is solid gold. Why not No Expecations...

    Rock's mindblowing unsung heroes

Harvey, a blues/rock/jazz guitarist and composer, was a bright light in Chicago's music scene and elsewhere in the sixties and seventies. He played with many of the stars of the day, including Mayall and Charlie Musselwhite. In the course his solo career he jammed with folks like Jerry Garcia...
