    Recommendations for Guild Dreadnought Cutaways?

I have relatively high standards when it comes to guitars. I have 6 late ‘60’s early 70’s Guilds, as well as several Brazilian Martin D28’s. When I started playing out again, after a 10 plus year hiatus, I bought a D140ce. I had gotten a flyer from Sam Ash and they had it advertised for a...

Differences Between the 70's F512's and Modern Days F512?

John Denver actually played an F612, not an F512. The 612 is larger, in fact while it‘s dimensions on paper don‘t make it seem that much larger, it is huge. I have several F512’s and an F612, and the F612 is enormous. If you look at the F512, and F612 together, the neck on the F612 is a little...

Why Guild’s 12-string design is one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century

I am fortunate enough to own an F612 as well as 3 F512’s and an F212. The F612 is in pretty rough shape, but the sound is just indescribable. The F512’s each sound like a choir of angels, but the F612 sounds even better. I think that there are only 9 or 10 of them still in existence. They are...

    Sacrilege-I know, I know

I have 2 MIC Guilds. A GAD140CE, and an F1512.Both of them are outstanding guitars. I also have 3 F512’s, an F612, 2 F50R’s and an F 212, all,of which were built between 1969 and 1975. While the MIC Guilds don’t compare to my vintage Guilds, they are definitely a close second.

Do You Have a Clear Preference of String For Your Guilds?

I use Elixir lights, exclusively. It takes a few days for them to settle down, but then they sound great. They last far longer than any other string that I have ever used.

    D-1212 12 String

I bought an F1512 4 or 5 years ago. I believe it’s a GAD series. Excellent guitar, excellent craftsmanship. Is it as nice as either of my F512’s or my F612? No, but for the price, you can’t go wrong.

    Reset time cost vs value

Neck resets are really just normal maintenance on any 40+ year old guitar. I really don’t think that you can look at it the way you are trying to look at it in terms of value.

    D55almost therebut what about Bluegrass?

Unfortunately, it is impossible to generalize when it comes to the sound of a guitar, although I see people do it all of the time. They all sound different and the only way to determine if it is a “bluegrass guitar“ is to play it and see how it sounds. Dreadnaught size guitars tend to have more...

    1970 Guild F-512 Brazilian Rosewood w/ F-612 Inlays

Guild really did do some crazy things back then. I have an F512 that has Brazilian sides and an Indian rosewood back. it also has the F612 position markers as well as a dark overlay on the back of the headstock extending down into the neck. The angle of the head stock is also different than on...

Pickup for a 12 String Acoustic

For what it’s worth. I could never find a pickup that would give me the natural acoustic sound that I was looking for, so I decided to experiment. I ended up mounting wireless Samson lavalier microphones inside of all of my guitars. It gives you the absolute best, natural, acoustic sound that...

What do you do when the new [old] one blows the old one away?

I think that to a degree you may be comparing apples to oranges. Silk and steel versus silk and bronze will give you completely different sounds. Years ago they made acoustic guitar strings where the bass strings were wrapped in nickel steel rather than a bronze. I bought them by mistake. I put...

    Fret wire

I’m having a guitar built based on my mid ‘70’s F50R. Does anyone know of a source for the fret wire that was used on those guitars?

What about this 1966 Guild D-50(BRW claimed) on Reverb?

It is my understanding that the Brazilian rosewood “thing” all boils down to the density of the wood. I have a good friend that is a luthier and according to him the more dense the wood the more the guitar will project. Brazilian is more dense than East Indian. Cocobolo(?) is close to, if not...

What about this 1966 Guild D-50(BRW claimed) on Reverb?

Cool guitar, but, for what it’s worth, I would stay away from it, especially, at that price. It’s been professionally set up but the action is high? Well, then it hasn’t been professionally set up. Having a neck reset done is just considered normal maintenance on a guitar of that age. I love...

Either way, I could be interested in it. What year is it, and what are you asking for it?

    Looking For A Smaller Guild

I’m a chiropractor, and the stiffness and tenseness between the shoulder blades is something that chiropractic care can help you with. It’s a very common problem for guitar players to experience that because of the posture that you have to assume in order to play.

Do you mind me asking what is wrong with your shoulder?

    Lowered action, change in tone?

No question that lowering the action will cause you to loose that “boom”. Interesting side note, I have a 1970 D28 that I have never liked. It just simply was a dog. I always used medium strings on it. I have been using medium Elixir strings on all of my guitars for a number of years now, but I...

    John Denver’s F50R

I’ve seen him with an F612 and at least one other Guild 12, but I’m not sure what model it was. It was the one on the cover of Poems and Prayers and Promises.
