    Carter family ?

Over the years, I've heard this hybrid style of picking/strumming referred to as the "Carter Scratch". https://thebluegrassjamboree.com/the-carter-scratch/ Playing that big Gibson L-5 Archtop, young Maybelle Carter could get those bass runs to really project out to the listening audience!

The pain of TV's and Cable

I have Comcast cable TV and internet. The service is OK. Not great, but not terrible either. I watch a lot of sports, especially college football on Saturdays. And, I like having access to the local and national news. The response time for service calls has improved a lot. I guess they got tired...

Travelin' McCourys for the win again....

Fun fact: Del is short for Delano. Delano Floyd McCoury was born in 1939 and named after FDR. I guess his parents were impressed with the programs of the New Deal during the Depression.

    Guilds in the Great Outdoors

Pretty sunburst. I like the tractor with the rusted out wheel and seat!

The palm of the hand is one thing… but the fingertips. Look out !👀

Travelin' McCourys for the win again....

I saw Del McCoury and the boys at a concert hall in the 90’s. This was back when they would gather around a single mike to sing harmony and take solos, like the old radio broadcast days. It was quite the choreography! The opening act was Peter Rowan and Tony Rice. Great show!

When I think of the covers my friends and I did at this age...

I really like the camera angle from the headstock of the Bass. It must clip on right next to the tuner. Very cool!

And it comes with a "Glass Display Case". Is that because nobody really wants to play it?

Aha! The famous Alligator Stratocaster... said to be a gift from Graham Nash as a way to thank Jerry Garcia for playing on his album. This is the tone heard on Europe '72, played thru a Fender Twin Reverb. My favorite tone of all Garcia's guitars!

    RIP Len Chandler

I am not familiar with the music of Len Chandler, but his Bio mentions that he was hanging around Greenwich Village and Washington Square Park with Dave Van Ronk, Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton and Joan Baez. Here is the obit from the NYT. There is a cool B&W photo of Len playing a Guild F-50R Electric...

Hatted Frau (aka Rockin' Doc) wants to drop in

Hello Darryl. We have missed your sense of humor and terrible puns around here. Some folks that have developed arthritis in their hands switch to playing nylon string guitars because they are easier to fret. There are many companies that make a hybrid classical with a narrow width at the nut...

    '80s DE-500 Reissues

Does anyone following this thread know how many reissue DE-500 were manufactured in the 1980’s?

    '80s DE-500 Reissues

Brian, I think that member Shakeylee was referring to the NOS DeArmond/Rowe pickups with wire harness and pots, not the DE-500 on Craigslist. I don't think he was trying to snipe you. A trip to the Eastern Shore is always a day well spent! I like the way member parker_knoll referred to the wire...

    '80s DE-500 Reissues

With the black plastic insert or the white plastic insert? Guild used the black ones (like Gretsch) early on, but then switched to white.

    '80s DE-500 Reissues

The pickups are original DeArmond 2000 (Dynasonics) manufactured for Guild by Rowe Industries for the original production run of the DE-500. They were found in the parts store room at the factory in the 1980's. There was a thread over on the Gretsch Pages (no longer available) where Duane Eddy's...

The World's Oldest Known Notated Piece of Music

Very cool! I enjoyed listening to the melody played on the lyre. The detective work to make sense of the music notation is an interesting project. Thanks for posting.

    RIP Jimmy Buffett

I remember listening to Jimmy Buffett's albums back in the 1970's. It was good-time, partying music for the most part, but he also had a thoughtful, more reflective side as well. He became known for the festival-like atmosphere of his live concerts, but he started out playing solo gigs in bars...

Very cool video clip! I like the tone of that guitar just raw thru an amp with no backup instruments.

That's one way of dealing with the neck dipping because of too much weight on the headstock. But switching to lighter tuners would have been a more reasonable solution.
