Objects you don't see much anymore

Mom, the RN was a big believer in that stuff. I remember the smell, the way it dyed your skin and the way it stung. God forbid you showed up with some road rash from a bicycle get-off.

    I need a new hat

I love mine. It is my "working in the yard and drenched in sweat" hat. It is pretty gross and smelly, but I refuse to wash it and remove that hard earned patina. I particularly like the way my sweat dries into a salt marker that looks like a tide line. Was walking through a local garden...

A pretty incredible first take, Jerry Garcia on pedal steel

Then there's this guy. Saw him twice at the Ram's Head in Annapolis - great shows. Equally good on the six string and steel:

Some of my favorite steel guitar playing of Jerry's is on this:

    General humor

Had one in my office desk drawer at all times and used it too. Sometimes thought it would go the way of carbon paper, but not yet.

What are you listening to right now?

Put a Sonos speaker in the sun room today, and played this to welcome it into my audio universe:

    Brian Wilson R.I.P.

Growing up in Rancho Cordova, CA in the mid-'60's I was firmly in the Beach Boys camp in the Beach Boys vs. The Beatles allegiances. I pestered my parents for a copy of the Beach Boys Today album and wore it out. The second side of that album, with all the Brian Wilson ballads is a...

    General humor

That reminded me of something I saw in National Lampoon decades ago. I went looking through my back issues, and sure enough, I found Dad's Drawer from June, '74. This is half of it - my scanner will only do a page at a time, and the other page is a little more risque than this.

    I really like Charlie Watts....

Picked this up from Discogs a little while ago and it is in heavy rotation on my plethora of listening devices. Worth a listen. https://www.allmusic.com/album/from-one-charlie-mw0000269329

Objects you don't see much anymore

Pop was an engineer who started in aerospace: Aerojet General for the Polaris missle program, then GE for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program, then what was euphamistically called "Re-Entry Systems" by GE (MIRV'd warheads) before returning to his roots in the petroleum industry. His copy of...

    Nashville.

Good. Nashville is one of those places I just never seem to get tired of. Next time you're there try to catch a show at the Ryman Auditorium; it seems to bring out the best in every performer on that stage because of who has walked that stage before.

    Time for some guitarist jokes...

Don't have a drop of Scots in me, but "Scotland The Brave" (particularly by massed bands) will raise the hair on me.

What makes this a healthy online community?

LTG is like a secret, special place that you're careful about sharing - you'll share it with people you trust, but not with anyone who might trample the flowers or leave trash behind. Because we treasure it, we care for it because it would leave a palpable void if it were gone. The moderators...

    Nashville.

This is what I wrote almost 5 years ago in an LTG post: "I love the vibe at Carter's - every time I've been there it was full of working musicians talking about gigs past, present and future. Gruhn's makes me think I should have a audited net worth statement pinned to my shirt when I walk in...

What, No Spring '25 Time Change Thread?

I happen to be awake at 1:59 a.m. this morning and had the singular privilege of seeing my cell phone go from 1:59 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.. Which makes me think I should have scheduled a fake appointment with someone for 2:15 a.m. this morning.

    Dream cars

My beloved (and totaled) '14 Venza was recently replaced with a '25 Subaru Outback Limited XT in Auburn Green Metallic. It has the 2.4L turbo (260-hp vs.182-hp in the standard 2.5L), and it goes like stink when you put your boot in it. On road trips it is a blissfully civilized tourer.
