How to Take Good Guitar Photos

One trick that makes a lot of difference is to get a large black cloth. Hang it and position the guitar and yourself so that any reflections from the guitar body are only the black cloth. Then you don't see tree leaves, ceiling lights, etc in the guitar's finish. +1 on using outdoor light...

    My fellow Americans:

Yes, happy 4th of July, everyone. And special thanks to those of you who have served in our military to keep us independent and free. I was at Fort McHenry in Baltimore a few weeks ago (Where the Star Spangled Banner was written). I was struck and moved by the courage of the common citizens...

    RIP Jim Marshall

A story I read was that when Jim Marshall was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame several yeras ago, Jimmy Page got up on stage and gave a four-word induction speach: "It's all your fault." It's funny how Leo, Les, and Jim were just common folks "tinkering in their garages", so to...

    Quit smoking

Neither my wife or I ever smoked. Shortly after we were married, our washing machine broke. We took laundry to my parents' house, where my dad smoked. Some clothes were hung on a clothes line in the basement. When we took them home, they reaked so badly of cigarette smoke, we had to store them...

    Quit smoking

Congrats, Dread. That's quite an accomplishment. :D :D How have the cig companies survived without your cash?  Like Tom's friend, my dad smoked all his life and died from emphysema two years ago. Tough to watch. Not a way I would choose to die.

Elixir Nanoweb 80/20 vs Polyweb 80/20....

Elixir Nanos have been the only strings I've used for years. I use the Phosphor Bronze rather than the 80/20's. When Elixirs first came out they were the heavier coating - now called polywebs. In my experience, they are just a bit duller, but feel much more slippery under my fingers. The...

    Neck Angle, Action, Shaving Saddle...

Yep, you can sand the saddle down if there is sufficient saddle remaining. At the twelth fret, measure how far down you want the action to go ... say, 1/64 inch for example. You then need to sand twice that amount, 2/64ths (1/32nd) inch from the bottom of the saddle. If there is less than...

Guild CO-2... what's not to like?

I think they can be great guitars if you get one that does not have a neck issue. I had one that I liked very much. Crisp, clear tone and very respoonsive. I could set it up well to make it very easy to play. The bolt-on neck made adjustments a breeze. You can shim the neck joint to adjust...

    One-Armed Fiddle Player

Not a joke, but a testament to desire and persistance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYmqC5XznEw&feature=related He holds the bow with his legs and tilts the instrument to play different strings.

Doyle Dykes playing Guild at NAMM

Bill, if a Signature Model is made I doubt that it will have the current Guild open-back tuners. I've heard Doyle say how he does not like open-back tuners for traveling on tour because they collect dirt and lint too easily. He wants closed-back tuners.

Doyle Dykes playing Guild at NAMM

That was just speculation. The page 4 article in this NAMM publication http://digitaleditions.sheridan.com/publication/?i=96813 says it is a prototype. Doyle prefers to play short-scale guitars. It was his desire for a short scale that convinced Bob Taylor to start making them, and short-scale...

    Bob Taylor blows my mind...

If they were smart, they asked for his help and input. Several years ago he went to the Martin factory to help them set up their new CNC machines. He did the same for Jim Olson. He has said more than once that Taylor could never ever meet the domestic demand for guitars, so he respects his...
