D-55 setup tweak made a world of difference

Most guitar manufacturers leave nut slots and bridge saddles high, on purpose. The expectation being that the guitar will be set up and those issues will be corrected during set up. If they left them low, or say set up for light strings, setup gets a lot more complicated if a buyer wants a...

Tell Me About Guild Classicals, Please

Is it just me, or does anybody else find the use of mahogany top on the Mark I a little odd? Classical guitars tend to lose a lot of string energy (due to the strings) on the way to the bridge, and mahogany, being a hardwood, usually would require more energy to get moving. Strange choice of...

    Factory seconds?

My GAD-30R is an MIRC refurb unit. I can see no issue with it, but it came with some sort of pickup with it, and it had the "barndoor" controls. There is nothing wrong with it that I can see, but the label did have its serial number scratched out, and there is some sort of an MIRC serial number...

Exquisite wide grain and bear claw top in early F-112, is it Sitka Spruce

Note that medullary rays, and silking are not anomalies. but a product of the way the soundboard wood is cut. It is present in all spruce varieties, not limited to Sitka, Adirondak, or Engleman, or any of the "European" spruces. Medullary rays are the "veins" or passages that distribute the...

D4 vs Dv4 bracing and tone

Strictly from memory, there was a DV-52 in rosewood, and a DV-6 in mahogany. The DV-52 was discontinued sometime in the early 2000s. The DV-6 then became a rosewood dread, and the DV-4 was introduced as a mahogany dread. I think the rosewood DV-6 and the mahogany DV-4 started in Tacoma, but were...

    1980 d40 "electric"

i think there are a couple of things being mingled here that possibly shouldn't be. 1. The Bridge Doctor being used to correct excessive sound board belly-ing is a valid repair, without a doubt. It does what it is supposed to do, and what it is advertised as doing. It also adds weight and...

    New owner,1980 F-412

That both sides of the crack are level is interesting, but ultimately unimportant. The neck block has moved down towards the bridge. This means that all of the glue joints in the area Have been comprimised to a greater or lesser extent. This includes the neck block joints (top and bottom), the...

    NGD: 1969 F312

Ted Woodford (twoodfrd on Youtube) has been doing this for at least a couple of years now. He even has a video that goes over the reasons for it, and what benefits it brings. He also has more than one video of the foam cutters being used to remove necks for neck resets. A couple are Guilds, but...

For $5K US which one(s) wouldn't you sell, if any?

Of the Guilds that I have owned, the only one is the GAD30R. The others are/weren't for sale, at any price. The only reason I would sell the GAD30R is in order to get a F30R, or even one mahogany or maple. The rest of them don't go anywhere.

    Looking for a "beater"

Also, John McQuarrie of Northwood guitars (not sure if he is still building). There are others, many in the Vancouver and surrounding area, but not only there. There are loads of great handbuilders in the US, as well.

    Looking for a "beater"

It is Godin Guitars now. LaSiDo was the old name for Godin. The Boucher brothers are the sons of Normand Boucher, who started building guitars by hand at first, and then started up a guitar factory that went through a number of transitions to become the Godin factory today. The Norman line of...

Replacement tuners for a '73 D-35, any suggestions?

You may want to take a look at the HIpshot line of tuners. They do have open back tuners with 18:1 ratios, and they are very, very smooth in tuning action, and rock solid in tuning stability. Only thing to be careful about is that the tuning shaft size may not be rignt for you ( I think they...

Help me sort out what to do…

The standard rule of thumb is that acoustic guitar action should be around 6/64" (=3/32") on the bass E. 5-5.5/64 on the treble side. Action can move up or down by up to 2/64 (=1/32) based on things like player's preference, string gauge, and playing style (strumming. finger style, or...

Exposed Wood..Do I Need To Protect?

Different perspective from me. I am going to assume this is the D25Min your signature that has the scratches, I would suggest that you do protect the wood, just to make sure that it stays clean should you choose to have it refinished at some point in the future. In my opinion, I would suggest...

New Member, New To Guild, And New D-20

There is nothing wrong with any light strings by any major manufacturer. The 168.5 Lbs. of tension should be fine for a guitar designed for use with light strings. The GHS Americana are probably somewhat stiffer (higher tension), but not as stiff as any manufacturer's mediums. You would...

New Member, New To Guild, And New D-20

You may want to try GHS Americana Light (.012-.053) strings. Their tension is somewhat higher than other light strings from pretty much any other light strings, so they won't have the tension of mediums, but will still have higher tension than most light sets. I am unsure as to why the extra...

    What is your favorite acoustic?

Best guitar I have owned is my now departed DV-52, followed by now also departed Harmony H1260 and currently owned F-50R. Best guitar I ever heard was a '34 Gibson J-35.

    Round core strings

Wound string are almost always hex cored. Plain strings are round. The hex core on wound strings helps secure the wind wire from unravelling. The plain strings don't have that requirement, so are round core. There's a lot of aspects that can be played with; for example, cryo treating the wind...

    Questions about a "New" 2007 F-47m

E-Type, before you go ripping that already installed DTAR pickup system out, if a good pickup sound is important to you, know that a microphone internal to the body can be added to the system. If you open the DTAR preamp box, there is actually a provision to connect the leads from another...

Comparing 12 Strings (with pics and video)

if you mean that the action is easier with the G312 with the same string gauge, it means that the F112 probably needs a setup. Neck relief, nut slot height, fret height, saddle height, etc. can all impact playability. I am assuming that the scale lengths on both are the same. Humidity could even...
