FS/FT Vintage NOS Maxima flatwound bass strings

Sure, if you have a 49-109 set, I would take a go at those on the old fretless P bass 🤠

Bass saddles for sale on Guild site now!!

Yup, my old 66 (serial in the mid 300's if I recall correctly) had original plastic saddles. Sounded just fine. Sounded fantastic actually but I doubt rosewood or ebony saddles would have made it sound not fantastic.

String gauges and hand strength/tuning stability issues. What's your experience?

It certainly could. I've had defective flatwound strings where the outer winding had loosened along the speaking length of the string and I could actually accordion it back and forth just by touching the string and sliding my finger along it (if that makes sense). So it could be a defective...

FS/FT Vintage NOS Maxima flatwound bass strings

I'm really not sure. From what I've heard there seems to be some connection between Maxima and the recently revived, German Optima brand, which I think used to offer black tapewounds and actual gold-plated roundwound bass strings. Don't know anything about their guitar string offerings though...

FS/FT Vintage NOS Maxima flatwound bass strings

As some of you may know, I'm a huge fan of these strings on my Starfires. I was lucky enough to find a source last year. From what I gather, these must have come from a luthier or builder in CA, who had them left over after closing up shop. Once I spotted them, I realized a lot of parallels with...

String gauges and hand strength/tuning stability issues. What's your experience?

Yeah, some brands will be more resilient than others in this situation. I never had issues with long-scale DA Chromes or Fender Flats on my Starfires (same goes for tapewounds from both brands too). Even after stripping a layer of the actual flat-steel winding to get them through the tuning post...

String gauges and hand strength/tuning stability issues. What's your experience?

I'm assuming you have tried TI Flatwounds and/or Labella Low Tension Flats? The TI's at least, as you likely know, are much lighter tension and floppier than other strings of the same gauge, due to their construction. I was never a big fan of them on bass -- won't put anything else on my...

A Thread for Premium Dead (whatcha Grateful for?)

As far as studio albums go, my favorites are Anthem of the Sun (specifically the '71[?] remaster) and Aoxomoxoa (original '69 mixes). That said, I often dip into all the others that came before Made In Heaven... Made In Heaven and what came after just aren't my cup of tea. I definitely agree...

A Thread for Premium Dead (whatcha Grateful for?)

Their catalog as a whole certainly will not be everyone's cup of tea. In fact, even though they're definitely one of my favorite bands, I have a hard time with anything later than 1979... I feel like they gradually started losing steam in the late 70s (understandably!) and then the actual tones...

Seeking advice from seasoned FRETLESS electric bass players...😊

No need to worry too much about gauges, since the composition and assembly methods of a string can determine tension & stiffness just as much as the actual measured diameter. The only reason I'd say it might be a good idea to stick with the same gauges is that the nut on your bass already fits them

Seeking advice from seasoned FRETLESS electric bass players...😊

I have a fretless P bass that has been modified with a MusicMan style humbucker and active 3-band EQ. I absolutely love Ernie Ball Cobalt flatwounds on that one, along with foam underneath the strings, at the bridge. Can get very uprighty, which is how I mostly play it. If I take the foam out...

Guitar mass production - nice YouTube video

Awesome. Thanks for sharing! A friend of mine had a Crafter acoustic about 10 years ago. My band was on tour and we stopped in his town for a couple of nights in between gigs. We were all partying together with some of his friends, when one of them, who had had far too much to drink, fell flat...

    Maverick bass for guitar

I don't recall ever having the opportunity to play through a Maverick before. Not sure how similar the design is to the Guild Thunderstar Bass head, but that was one of the best sounding bass amps I've ever played through and it did sound great with guitar as well (as long as I plugged it into a...

I'm probably the only one who likes this stuff.....

Even though I spent the bulk of my childhood in the 90s, this one really makes me think about how much fun those days were. I loved school and the excitement of everything back then, so I guess I'm easily sent off into reminiscing. Ahh those golden days before cell phones!
