Not a lot of discussion here, so let me ruin it for you. A couple of years ago, I jumped off the deep end and ordered a Blue Chip pick. Absolutely loved it. Bought another. Then I found Charmed Life Picks and may like them better for some things. BS may win for feel, but CL has an upper mid tonal pallet that becomes addicting. Try both. Either will be better, or not, as the case may be. And no, you wont lose them. You'll pay attention to where you put them.

I did a quick search, here's just some of the previous pick threads.

I tried both that you mentioned but didn't really bond with them, particularly at their price point. I may have liked the Blue Chip more if they had some lighter gauges to choose from. I've tried so many types over the years, but it's cheap fun! I just cleaned out a collection of them here on LTG and on eBay. Right now, I am using Dunlop Delrin 500 .96 gauge, and enjoying them.

These are the closest to tortoise shell I've ever used. Several great tones come off depending on your attack. I keep a bunch on hand and reshape some to a little less than the 1mm standard light, and sculpt 1 or 2 to a couple different bevels.

I've gone heavier over the years. I used to use Fender mediums. Now 1.2 for guitar, 1.4 for mandolin. But find a pick you really like and it's worth it. I do think its like a novice wondering why someone would spend a grand on a fly fishing rod.

Used to use the oversized Fender heavys for years.

Now hooked on nylon Dunlops with textured grip. I like .73 thickness.

Not really the biggest Metallica fan, but I really like James' picks. The Hetfield White Fangs are great.
I usually play the 1.14, but I screwed up a couple months ago and bought the 1.0. I prefer the heavier pick but the 1.0 isn't too bad.
The grip on the pick is so nice.

For years I used the Dunlop Jazz iii heavy, then found a now defunct butterfly pick, similar in size to the Dunlop but with a different contour. Bought a few used blue chip, again similar in size, and liked them, but changed to gravity picks, they're my go to pick these days.

I bought a couple more Charmed Life picks, and now have either a Blue Chip or a CL for every regular player I own. Liking Charmed Life casein picks more and more. Lovely upper mids and highs. BCs glide off the strings. It's a back and forth like the one I'm playing experience.

I still play the Jazz III's on occasion on my mandolin and my electric guitar, but mostly I use my silver half-dollar picks on these instruments. There's just something about them when they get warmed up between your thumb and forefinger, I can't really describe it but I know it when I feel it and hear it.

I just wanted to say hello, everyone. It's been years since I've been here.

One of my challenges is there was a regular member here named Kevin who passed away a few years ago from a brain tumor, so every time I come in here or even think of Guild I automatically think of Kevin. He was a lovely guy and we traded a few long emails back and forth. I miss him, so I find it hard to talk about Guild.

Safety and health to all of you,

scott

Hey CLP, I remember Kevin. He was a super nice guy and he sure had a rough time of it at the end. There's other nice people here as well. Don't be a stranger. We're all gonna die, but until then, let's have fun. (y)

Welcome back Scott! Stick around.

I am a huge fan of the CL casein picks. I tried a lot of others and have found nothing better to bring out a guitar’s tone. Very responsive and articulate the highs/mids very well without sounding overly bright.

I also love the black aerospace material. I find they have a good punch with less emphasis on the highs. My second favorite.

I also have one brown vespel that I find more subdued that I like for certain songs and to tone down brightness.

Having pick material options means instant control over tonal aspects. Think of it as changing to different types of strings on every song!

I have settled on Dunlop Ultex picks for the last 4yrs. The Ultex material provides good tone and pick attack and it wears very little. The only thing that bugs me is the color, it blends in to a lot of different surfaces like a sniper in a ghillie suit. 😄 If you drop it on wooden floors or darker colored carpet just grab another pick bro, it will turn up eventually. The Ultex Jazz 3 XL for electric and the .73 for acoustic.
