Do you keep your acoustic in a case or leave it out?

I have found, if you keep your house around 50% humidity, there is no need to humidify your cased guitars, case closed.

Being in coastal California, I have no climate issues. Leaving a guitar out is a risk to damage greater than keeping in a case. Everyone's situation is different. Small children? A puppy? Big argument for a case. I have a few electrics and a mandolin hanging on the wall using Hercules hangers. I keep one acoustic on a Hercules stand, rotating between the big three. So generally one mandolin and one guitar ready to grab.

Mine have been in cases only when in transit. Oldest Guild is 1975 - we have cold winters w central heating - we have humid summers - I have labrador retriever banging strings with his tail - plus I'm in the house . . .

Only minor bumps here and there - but who knows where they came from? - leaning against wall - bumping mic-stand . . .

Rotate every three to four days. One I am playing stays on stand others in the case until I rotate.

Also coastal CA here, so all guitars are on the rack. If I lived in a place with more extremes, I would probably case them if i couldn't control the room overall.

Here we have a new member and this topic comes up and I'm thinking Al should be here to type endlessly about keeping guitars in their case except when being played!! Of course, Al and I have been known to have a disagreement from time to time. But he's not here and I keep all mine out on stands. There are 8 guitars here in the house and they're all easy to grab and play at any time. Two whole house humidifiers going 24/7/365. If I had to go get the case, lay it down, open it up, and take the guitar out and then repeat that process at the other end when I'm done, I'd never play it. So they're out. If you've got kids and large pets and such it would be a different answer, but definitely easier out.

Unless of course you're on Ambien...........right Tom?

In that "case".

GAAAAAAHH!!!! We try to not remember that fateful day!! As it was apparently no guitar was safe and I kept grabbing despite being put down to bed over and over. If you're on Ambien, lock the cases and lock the cases in the closet!!

I like having mine out where I can pick one up and play it. I am retired and find myself sitting and playing is 20 - 30 minute sessions many times over the course of a day. I have mine hanging on the wall. I tried stands but felt the hangers were safer for me. I have a dedicated music room with acceptable temperature and humidity year round.

Acoustics always in the case, damp sponge in case pocket. Well seasoned electrics can hang out without much of a problem so you always have something to grab and play.

Depends entirely on environment--and one's personal preference, of course. The guitars I want to play often are out on stands, and even with three cats and Minnesota weather there's nothing I can complain about. The D-40 has spent most of its 55 years out in midwestern climates (though it's currently not in playing rotation), and some of the others range between 120-74 years old and get similar treatment.

If I do keep my good classical in its case, but that's as more because I don't play it very often than to preserve it. My Goodall is probably worth more, dollar-wise, and it almost never rotates into case status.

When we get a spell of especially dry weather in the winter--more than the house humidifier can handle--I can take the edge off with a Dampit--I must have three or four kicking around--or put most of them away with case humidifiers.

Yes Sir,
They are all on the wall. If I had then in cases they would hardly get played!

Really, it depends on the climate and the situation in your domicile, NewOM240. For me, it's all about the time of year. Late spring, summer, and early fall are good times to put the guitars out on stands, but when the heat (baseboard) is on in the northeast, not so good. Also, the kids are grown and the animals do not cause trouble with the guitars on stands.

I kind of wish I had whole-house humidification, but my house is not ducted, and therefore I do not have a good conduit for that. So, once the humditty drops, into the cases (and humidified room) go the axes.

Having said all that, I forgot to mention that a lot also depends on your financial situation. Personally, as a "collector" of US-built Guilds, I wouldn't hesitate to leave an OM240 on a stand. I hope that doesn't sound too snotty, but it's true. Nice guitars, mind you, but not the type of axe that makes me worry about it.
