Link Wray laying on the trem effect in the Robert Gordon recording of The Way I Walk
Don't you wish autotune was more like wah-wah, and less like distortion in this regard?I think every decade goes a little crazy with a new technology and then settles down a bit. 50s/60s with tremolo and Farfisa organ sounds, the late 60s with the wah-wah pedal, the 80s with chorus, the drum machine craze, all synth bands, etc
But for electric guitar, it seems that distortion and reverb never quite go out of style.
Autotune is an amazing technology that was abused by Cher and then became a thing where people wanted that awful sound.Don't you wish autotune was more like wah-wah, and less like distortion in this regard?
Agreed. But it continues to be abused everywhere there is 'pop music.' A full quarter century since that first transgression. You would think/hope that the novelty, like with whole-mix flanging, would have worn off within six months.Autotune is an amazing technology that was abused by Cher and then became a thing where people wanted that awful sound.

Check out the Zafiros. An old Cuban do-wap group with Manuel Galban on guitar (of Buena Vista Social Club fame). Great subtle tremolo.
Ah'm witchya:
