Diane Warren ... After 13 Nominations ...

Daine Warren is one of those people behind the scenes in the music business - writing songs for the big names who can't/don't write or who just need help. Her output is MOR Pop, but apparently she is quite good at it. Her tunes are not the Pop in my Rice Krispies, but a lot of people do very much love her work without knowing who she is. After 13 nominations for an Oscar, she is finally getting one. Have a nice parade, Diane!

Señor Sanata is a bit more subdued than normal, playing within the groove rather than shredding over top of it. Diane is the bar tender.

That could be a pretty good tune, without the vocal & most of the visuals.

He’s got some of the tastiest chops ever heard in the last 60 years, that’s for sure.
I just like them played on the SG better. But yes, he’s always got great tone.
What he really needs is an S-100.

I think it all started with Santana's infatuation with saxophone players, John Coltane in particular. He seemed to be looking for something with more sustain that would allow him greater control over note duration (as in extended length) and allow him to play more sax-like legato phrases, in addition to his frenetic staccato Dorian ice-pick/switchblade attacks on your brain . He went through the period of high-end Yamahas and Gibson L6Ss and who knows whatelse before settling on the PRS guitars (and high-end effects pedals).

I, too, greatly miss the tone of the SGs with the P90s. I also miss the simpler, less effects-pedal-drenched playing of the first two albums.

I also do not understand why he totally abandoned playing rhythm guitar when he was so obviously good at it. Really good rhythm players are few and far between.

Yes. A shameful oversight on my part.

Isn't he paid for using whatever guitars came after his S.G. ? He lost a lot with the move, but sometimes I wonder if he didn't simply change at some point, and partially lost soul (Soul sacrifice ?)... The change would come from there, more than from guitars ! www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFCMrZ7jAJc

Yes, what bonds these two, besides Sri Chinmoy, is a shared love of John Coltrane. The first tune played above is one of Coltrane's .

I know (that's why I added it) : it may seem a contradiction to what I said, but I don't really mind (I'm aware that I could be wrong too)... But Santana's music has become more 'commercial' as time went by, and 'Santana' more of a solo thing, opposed to a group in its early years I believe...

Shortly before I saw these last few posts, I watched some videos with Paul Reed Smith and he said that when Carlos first fell in love with the PRS guitars(Paul gave him[had to persuade his guitar tech, or somebody] to try) he liked that it sounded saxophone-like. Apparently, there was no money up front.

I agree, Carlos is still a monster guitar player, but that band from Woodstock and the first few albums was a really hot band, and unique with the Latin instruments and influences combined with the Jazz and Blues and Rock
