New information about Tesla

The guy who bought the battery pack + electronics + powertrain in order to assemble it on his MB Gelänewagen has discovered, that the actual problem with the car was not really, that the batterypack had been changed - but some faulty connection due to moisture connected w some motor issue. And TESLA had not found this out. That's bad news for them. Of course this is happening and has been happening w every automobile manufacturer since how long.

Anyway - Tesla-electrified MB Geländewagen - wow - a dream come true - he hopes to have it ready and running this year. He is building it on his leisure time as hobby. Surely he's going to learn more than they teach at any training center about electric cars.

There is more - now the guy building the "Telandewagen" has made a video of what was done before exploding - and at the end we can see the Tesla motor running. More videos are coming.

And for our non-finnish-speaking audiences - the video is spoken in english - with heavy finnish accent, though.

I caught my first battery-powered bus this week. Not so sure I trust these battery-powered vehicles now after seeing this video.

Can you imagine if the bus had been full?? That doesn't look like something anyone would escape from. It went out of control VERY quickly!! Jeeze!!!

There are also videos of electric scooters burning - must be some of laptops, cellphones, Dysons etc burning.

With these thoughts in mind and having plenty of laptops cellphones + Dyson downstairs - I'll hit the hay - with any luck : "I'll be back!"

I wonder if these suits come in a color other than silver? I'll take two, please!

I'm 75, so I don't think I'll be around in 20 years, and if I am, I don't think I'll be all that interested in batteries.

I'm back ( post # 47 )

I'm 70 - and I could think that at my age whatever comes does not matter to me anymore, since I'm certainly closer to coffin than cradle. But my age does not seem to stop me from studying new things ( like new english expressions, that I need to be on this forum ) - I spend some time watching YouTube builders creating fascinating furniture - tools - gadgets - you name it. I will never need any of those, but I like to know how things work and how are they done.

I even started assorting my garbage about 15 years ago, when The Kid - ( Jesse - not Billy ) arrived to our household at ripe age of 3 months. He made me realize, that even though I'm soon to be gone, world remains after me - and it is my duty to take care of my share.

Rich - go and have a test-drive w battery-driven car - just for the sake of it. You do not have to buy it - nor say that it is better or worse - but just to get the experience. You do go out now and then and eat something that you never tried before ?

I've got to say that the 100% torque right off the line that you get from electric cars is pretty cool. My boss has a Tesla, and while I wouldn't want to support that company for a lot of reasons that I won't get into here, I wouldn't be averse to buying somebody else's electric car at some point. The only thing that sucks about them is that you can't get a manual transmission.

. . . The only thing that sucks about them is that you can't get a manual transmission.

I have a friend who hates automatic transmissions - two weeks ago it turned out why - over here manuals are still majprity - and for last ten years or so he has lived in Brussel, because of the job of his wife - he had very bad experiences w rented cars when visiting Finland - for some unfathomable reason they all seemed to have "digital brakes" = you merely touch the brake pedal and it is like stopping at wall.

Two weeks ago he was here - and for his surprise I made him drive my tiny SEAT eMii+ battery car - no manual transmission - no automatic transmission - just a fixed 1:? transmission. Reverse happens by changing the direction of the motor, which is at stop whenever the car is at stop.

So he tried a bit to say "I do not want to drive." - but since I'm older and we are good friends - he tried it. After about 200 meters he made first remarks of how smooth everything - including brakes - works. He drove around for maybe six miles. Then we switched and went to places, that he wanted to visit etc etc.

The outcome was that he realized, that the brake issue must be connected with those rental cars, while I assumed him that my MB ML320 has equally nice brakes even though it has automatic transmission.

And I have a feeling, that there is a light spark inside of him. that will accept automatic transmissions - plus battery cars 😂

I've never owned an automatic car, and I'm not ready to yet, but I might make an exception for a battery powered car. To me, shifting your own gears makes the driving experience more engaging, and I like the additional control it gives you as well.

Here in the states, manuals are an endangered species, and have actually become a pretty effective anti-theft device!

I love manual transmissions and that's what're in my cars. I realize I'm a dinosaur, though. I don't care.

The Teslas have pretty much sent the old "muscle car" generation back to the local drive-ins with their tail between their legs. I know, I spent this weekend working on my friend's Quadrajet carburetor, listening to all the old-timers grumble about the new Teslas taking over the streets and tracks. Most of the old-timers never got their street/strip modified cars into the 11s; Some of the Teslas are running in the 9s right out of the factory.

On the streets, I never ran manuals as the automatics (when properly set up) pretty much cleaned house in the crowd that I was running with. A lot of guys ran manual transmissions, but on the streets, none of them could "hook" and bang through the gears consistently. They broke a lot of stuff with those manual transmissions and kept my little residential garage repair shop busy for years. So in that sense, I really do like manual transmissions.

Believe me, I know that modern automatics are faster than their manual counterparts, but that's not why I prefer manual transmissions. And as far as old muscle cars are concerned, their performance isn't a patch on modern cars in general. I remember reading an article in Car & Driver (IIRC) where they compared modern cars to old muscle cars, and a '68 small block SS Camaro very similar to the one I used to own got spanked...by a Honda minivan!
