Rick Laird, perhaps best known as the bassist for monster fusion band Mahavishnu Orchestra but also an accomplished jazz bassist and later photographer, passed away on July 4th, 2021. I loved this band when I was in college - so intense! I've been enjoying playing along - or trying to anyway! - with some of their music. This led me on a search for live footage, trying to see how he plays certain things. I envision him either with a Fender bass or one of those Ampeg lucite see-thru basses, but apparently he was also known for playing an S. D. Curlee bass.
So I was really surprised to see him playing what looked like a Guild bass in this video from 1972. I recognized the headstock first. Around 4:30 you see an oblique view of the bass, and it finally reveals itself to be a JS-I. It looked like 2 pickups at first but it's that silver handset that some of them had nearer the bridge.
