My German friend calls American lager like Budweiser "yellow water."
Bush Light. I know. Really reaching low here. But 30 cans fir $20.
It ain’t bad.
No idea if it's emotional or physical maturity (as in becoming an old fart), but I do find myself constantly prefacing my remarks with "Life's too short to .... <fill in the blank>" As in, "Life's WAY too short to drink bad scotch / bourbon, Fro!"In many societies it is considered a sign of maturity when the quality of an alcoholic beverage is measured by the taste and not the cost to reach a certain level of intoxication.
That said, I do recall a time when I could go into a grocery store and choose between a case of Coca Cola at about $.25 per can or a case of Genesee Cream Ale on sale at about $.20 per can.
As a certified old fart, I continue to find myself drinking less and less beer, but on the other hand, I find myself paying more and more for what I do drink (and loving it). Life is short!
I may have told this story before but I travelled to Oaxaca about 20 years ago after the death of my first wife. A friend had moved there and had a nice house about 4 blocks up from the Zocalo. I had flown in from CNY to Mexico City and took a bus to Oaxaca...Class A bus, looked like a plane inside but I never told my friends that, they thought I was traveling with the chickens!
Anyway, he picks me up at the bus station and gives me some pesos at his house and tells me to walk downhill till I cannot go any further.
Tired, I grabbed a table on the sidewalk and the waitress comes over and hands me a plate of warm Spanish peanuts with some lime wedges. I ordered a Corona, (only beer I thought they'd have), but she said they were out and brought me a Modelo Negro...wt heck??? Dark beer??
Whoa...so good, no lime, but I ate two plates of Spanish peanuts with 3 beers and that was the start of a very well needed 10 days away from the past 4 years.
Still buy a six pack from time to time and smile
Speaking of beer; I went to our brewery in town, and after having a pint with lunch I saw that they not only fill growlers but had 32oz cans for sale $8., or 3 For $20. so I bought 3 different ones and found out they can them fresh at the time you order them. Wow, now that's the way you do it. New to me.

sweet!
a buddy at work is helping me find a decent beer on the cheap and here are the options:
Genesee Cream Ale
Hamm's
PBR
they are all around the same cost per 24 or 30 pack cans.
Beer advocate says all 3 are rated "Poor" but most of the reviewers on that site say all 3 are better than the regular mass produced beers that cost more...
still, that is a leg up from my current choice which they rate accurately as "Awful"
Genny Cream.
It was my favorite of those three in the 70's and that had noting to do with Genny Cream being ubiquitously low priced in Rochester.
We drank San Miguel beer in the Philippines. Problem was, their quality control wasn't real accurate on alcohol content, so you might drink six beers and hardly feel it, or drink 3 beers and be falling off your barstool, LOL.
