I like Tiger as much as anybody for his remarkable accomplishments and his kinda "desnobing"of golf, but I'm not buying the memory loss here.
We might never know, and I might be wrong, but I am strongly inclined to believe he was doing something he was not supposed to do in that car, aside from driving at 2 or 3 times the speed limit. A car doesn't suddenly decide to jump over the median and roll over a distance of a few hundred feet until it comes to a rest with the wheels up in the air, on its own.
If he WASN'T doing anything wrong, and this is just the result of his driving "skills", then someone in charge needs to consider revoking his DL fast, before this happens again with the addition of an innocent by-stander's death or injury.
Hope I'm proven wrong, but claiming not remembering anything after the first medic on the scene (minutes after the crash) already confirmed that he was conscious and even told him who he was, rules out the "stroke" or passing out" of some sort that could have explained the crash and associated memory loss.
Wishing him a fast recovery.

my guess is it’s painkillers. They are tough to overcome and he is always in tons of pain. I am glad no one else was hurt.

A friend and I were discussing this last night, and it's almost certain that he was on some kind of medication at the time, given how soon it was after his surgery. And also given are Tiger's somewhat dubious driving abilities. It's amazing that a guy with his kind of money doesn't have a full time driver.

"bluespicky" you hit the nail on the head!! It's so obvious something was going on, it's pathetic. Another thing that was hard to swallow, the police chief within a short time, said there was no evidence of impairment. Never heard any mention of a blood test or any test. The fire and rescue team were the one's who extracted him and put him in the ambulance, not the police. Like bluespicky said, he was driving 2 or 3 times the speed limit and the police chief said it was a pure accident, no charges. Don't think so.

One thing I do know, Tiger Woods is a snake; ask his ex wife and the 16 women that he cheated on her with.

I think his latest net worth figures are about 800 million. There's no way he can't afford a driver. And it seems he keeps making bad decisions that put himself and others at risk. Fine, you're in pain, so take the meds and let someone else do the driving. This is a situation that keeps recurring and that is so easily solved. So it's understandable that people are angry with him. He knows he's messed up. The people around him know he's messed up. Why not just make the right decision for a change instead of repeating bad decisions and putting people at risk?

Latest and greatest from Tiger Woods Speaks Out After LA County Sheriff Reveals He Was Speeding at Time of Car Accident (yahoo.com) :

"Tiger Woods has released a statement following the conclusion of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office investigation into his February car crash — but the pro golfer didn't mention that he was found to have been speeding nearly 40 miles over the speed limit at the time. "

One theory is that he may have hit the gas pedal instead the brakes:Tiger Woods may have hit accelerator instead of brake in high-speed crash (yahoo.com)

I've heard about some 90 year old not wanting to quit driving, and mistaking the gas for the brakes, but a 45 year old "athlete"?.....
That would definitely affirm the statements above: Time to hire a driver!

I was surprised that the police didn't even try to have blood samples tested for alcohol or drugs after that (obviously high-speed) crash.

They certainly would have if a non-celebrity driver was at the wheel.

The reports I saw on broadcast news had a snippet from a press conference addressing that. Basically the claim is that there was no evidence of impairment when the authorities arrived and the focus was on saving life.

Now that I try and summarize what was said it does smack of a double standard. I will also note statements to the press that suggest Mr. Woods has a right to privacy that was being respected. Again, a cynic would see more evidence of a double standard.

I will note that in the greater DC region there are one or two accidents a year that make the news - car plowing into a crowd or a building - and the explanation is usually impairment or operator error, specifically hitting the gas when the brake was intended. In some cases the wrong pedal hypothesis is confirmed by the driver after the accident. So the wrong pedal hypothesis could be correct.

Yeah, right.

Wrong pedal wound not last long enuff to increase 40 mph. You know when it’s the gas pedal. 😀

Going 40 over the speed limit? That's a lot. If he hit the wrong pedal and trees started whizzing by at twice their previous whizzing by rate shouldn't he fairly quickly deduce, "Gee, I must be pressing the wrong pedal" and ease off?

I will say though that something used to get stuck on my Monarch and it would start going faster and faster with no response at all to letting off the gas. It was frightening. It happened one day driving to town. A coworker of my husband met me on the road and the look on my face was concerning enough to him that he turned around and came back to make sure everything was okay. By that time I had pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off. Cranked it up again and it was fine.

No clue what was going on. It happened several times and I put it in the shop but it didn't do it when they checked it out and they found nothing wrong. I picked it up at the end of the day, they even locked their doors behind me, and when leaving their parking lot it did it again. Isn't that always the case? But as far as I recall I think that was the last time. Never did know what was going on but glad it quit.

I used to say that it grew a cruise control, despite the obvious lack of control.

The accident Mr. Woods was in could have been either operator error or mechanical failure. I wasn't there so I'm not going to try to guess.

Dunno. If he's already exceeding the speed limit and something makes him decide to hit the brakes he could hit the gas and then lose control. 45 to 85 is a lot for the wrong pedal in a few seconds but 80 to 85 is not.

"Villanueva asserted to reporters that rumors of preferential treatment for Woods in the wake of the crash are "absolutely false."

Well, there you have it. :rolleyes:

I would argue that nearly doubling the posted speed limit in a SUV, on a road that locals say can only be negotiated by a high-end supercar and a professional driver at those speeds, with no effort made to brake or back off on the gas pedal, is good enough reason to consider the possibility of impairment.

Seems to me that there are at least three possible explanations for the vehicle & operator behavior in this case:
  1. Operator asleep, with his foot on the gas pedal;
  2. Operator impaired by circumstances or substance(s) unknown, and unable to respond appropriately to the situation;
  3. Operator choosing to crash, for reasons unknown.
I would consider a sleepy driver to be the least likely of these three possibilities, given that the hotel staff claimed Mr. Woods left the hotel minutes before the crash in an agitated state & at a high rate of speed.
