A friend of mine has tasked me with finding out who this is. She sand a song about love through the eyes of her dog.

I wonder if a reverse image search would help

I've always wanted to know how to due a reverse image search. How do you do it?

1) Go to Google
2) Click on "Images" (upper right)
3) In the new search bar, click on the camera
4) Paste a URL or upload an actual image

I just did it for this picture and it returns "Tambur", which is not what she's playing.

Where did you get the pic? Do you have the name of the song?

I’ll find out where she got pic. No song name. The only lyric she can remember is
“I know you love me”

I couldn't locate that specific picture or that specific banjo anywhere on the internet but I'd say that's Rhiannon Giddens on the picture and the song might be Nick Drakes's "Black Eyed Dog" she covered?
EDIT: Both wrong...See post #20 who it is.

Rhiannon is sees a lot with a banjo, but I haven't seen a shot with her hair that long and I just don't think her facial features match.

After reading a snippet of her Wiki page, a banjo player who trained for opera singing.....That's a very different end of the spectrum talent set.

Long hair is not the problem but you are right, the facial feature do not match. Even if the pictures are years apart. Unless she had her nose done in the left picture. But again, that well used Banjo with the tree of life inlays is pretty uniques and there is no other picture of her with that one.

She's young, but the dog is old, and so is the banjo, which is quite inlaid, possibly with Remo head. She's very petite.

The dog has a collar and tag, black lab female, suffering from typical separation anxiety.

Cold weather boots with thick soles, fashion statement or necessity?

Boots look worn, suede.

Bell bottom jeans.

She doesn't have a right arm, but don't look for it too long, there are other things you probably shouldn't be looking at ;]

Dark hair and gorgeous skin tone maybe partially native American, maybe Oklahoma?

The photo is a glitzy production great but subtle seamless backdrop, or a real earthen lodge, possibly maybe even a tepee, and the ragged manipulated edges are reminiscent of Polaroid SX70 film manipulation of the old days.

That's all I could see at a glance ;]

I use TinEye for reverse image searches.

That said, TinEye found it but the links are several years old and not really useful. If I were getting paid, I'd see whether Dishburn as a performer or Dillard and Cedartown Georgia got me anything. But since I don't have the tools I had when I was getting paid, someone else can follow this trail.

What kind of guitar is she playing?
It's an 8 string octave mandolin built by Fletcher Brock.

"Jarosz’s octave mandolin is guitar-shaped, with a carved, x-braced Engelmann spruce top, two f-holes, curly big leaf maple back and sides, a 14 3/8-inch lower bout, and a 21 1/2-inch scale length. It has Gotoh mini tuners and a Monteleone style tailpiece made by Allen Guitars and a bridge and pickguard made of ebony. The neck is red maple and has two carbon fiber rods which flank a Martin style adjustable truss rod. The case is custom made by Cedar Creek Cases. As for strings, Jarosz has her own method of finding the right ones. “For some reason I really don’t like regular octave mandolin strings, they sound kind of tinny to me. So I use medium sets of guitar strings in different combinations to get the right gauges.” "

I still am not sure if that is the same person. But, she can play! The original photo looks 70s. The girl in the video clip wasn't probably even born in the 70s.

Well, I found her, but not that song.
I have to disappoint you, that is not Sarah Janosz on the picture.
Frono was on the right track, the girl with the dog and the banjo is Shannon Whitworth from North Carolina! And the picture is from 2010, not 70s...
Here's another one:
