I have a really nice D 70. It has typical playwear and isn't perfect by any means cosmetically but I truly don't care much. It's a wonderful guitar. This is the model without the carved neck heel.

But there was always an issue with the headstock overlay/applique or whatever the right word is. it just looked like crap to me. I could put up with the playwear but not that headstock deal.

So, I sent it to Tom Jacobs and now it looks the way I need it to look to make me a happy guy.

Here's a couple before (1st 7 pics) and after pics. They may not be good to show you the issue before and how it looks after but trust me the difference is significant and well worth the repair cost (at least to me).

While it was there Tom also repaired a ding on the back of the neck, buffed out the guitar, did a fret level and re-crown and a complete set up and string change.

Does anyone know what causes that when the edges of the inlay get all funky and make 'em look like that? That looks SO MUCH BETTER!!! What would cause that?? Anyone?? You see it on some guitars and not on others the same age.

No the rosette inlay. Need to pay closer attantion.

The headstock looks like the usual overlay shrinkage which someone elses can explain :)
No I was specifically talking about the headstock with the funky rooftop logo and G-shield. I didn't even see a photo of the soundhole........

I just assumed that it was the lacquer losing adhesion from the underlying inlay and overlay... due to differential shrinkage over time, or pressure (where nuts are tightened to hold the tuner bushings, etc). Sort of like a "two dimensional" lacquer check between surfaces.

Old Tacoma brand guitars are famous for this kind of top coat separation, not just on the headstock but everywhere. Supposedly this was caused by the company using "green" wood -- that is, building guitars with wood that hadn't been properly seasoned and allowed to dry.

You occasionally see it happening to Guilds (I've owned a couple with the same problem) but not often.

As GardMan notes, tightening the tuner bushings too much can cause it to happen in those specific areas.

Makes you, almost, wish something was wrong with one of your Guilds so you could send it to Tom Jacobs and witness his "magic" first hand. But most of my Guilds come from Richard and need nothing but playing.
