Hi GAD - photos I have previously been able to upload from my PC now say "file too large". Is there something we should be doing differently? I'm using the "Insert Image" button.

When I try to upload an image directly from my iPhone to the forum, it says "File Too Large". So then just because it's easy to do, I send the same photo from my I phone to my email and when the iPhone says "Which size do you want to send" I pick "Large" which is the next one down from Original sized. Then when I try to upload from my computer to the forum it uploads easily with no message. This may not fit your situation, but that works for me with those specific tools/phones/softwares.

Thanks, Tom, but I'm uploading from my PC, doing the same thing I've done before. Just doesn't work now.

My experience has been, since the beginning of the Age of the New Software, that there are size limits on photos I upload. Doesn't matter where they are from. They are just too big. The solution is to host elsewhere and link (deja vu) or resize them.

I have never experienced uploading a photo and then trying to re-upload the same file and having it fail due to size limits. I have seen cases where the file size of the same photo does vary between my camera/phone, Google Photos and a direct download to my PC.

I have found that pressing the image icon and dragging the photo from my PC to "LTG" is the most reliable way for me to get a photo posted.

Just tried the "drag" you suggested, frono, still "too big".

But I was able to do it using imgr, like the "old" days. I posted a photo to Richard's "Contrast" thread.

Still don't get it, though, as I have already posted photos the "new" way with success.

Too big is too big no matter how you try. I mentioned the drag because I had problems with properly sized photos that I could not upload because of operator error. Moving to one technique exclusively fixed the operator error problem.

Forgive me but I spent enough time on frontline IT support to be pretty cynical when someone says they are doing exactly what they did before ("previously uploaded") and it doesn't work now. Anecdotally about 80% of the problems were resolved by figuring out that they weren't doing exactly what they did before and changing something as a result (or returning to the correct old way).

So I until GAD tells us he has changed something (which I am not expecting since he usually warns the Mods) I am trying to diplomatically identify the operator error or develop confidence in the hypothesis that there really is a software issue.

My experience has been that photo file sizes vary widely on my system depending upon how the photo made it from the camera to my PC and what processing happened in the process. So my hypothesis is you did something different. Perhaps the image was a HD image? Perhaps the "right sized" images had been stored in Google Photos? Perhaps there had been some image editing that made something right sized and the "perfect", unedited photo was too big?

I also have IT experiences so I know what you are saying. But I have uploaded photos to LTG using the nicely simplified "insert image" from the new software. Even deleted imgr from my "favorites" because I wasn't using it any more.

The photo in question is a few years old, and has not been modified in any way. But since the new software, I have not tried to upload THAT particular photo. This is perhaps a key point!

So, who knows?

"Too big" can mean one of two things:

1) The pixel dimensions are too large. The system is set to only allow images up to 2000x2000 which is far more than big enough. If you're using images directly from a modern phone, tablet, or camera they will likely need to be resized.

2) The file size is too large. Just because two images are (for example) 1600x1066, that does not mean they will be the same size. A picture of a plain white wall has far less colors and detail then a picture of flowers, so the picture of flowers, though possibly at the same pixel resolution, will have a larger file size. The mazimum file size is 2048KB which is 2MB. This is WAY more than large enough.

For reference, my images are almost always 1600x1066 (1600 on the longest side). With a high quality image the file size is usually around 500KB-1MB for me. Examples:

This image is 1600x1067 and is 376KB (it's small because it's mostly plain white):

Guild-2002-Bluesbird-Holorflake-TopFull-NW_1600.jpg

This image is 1600x1067 and is 1.1MB (because it's more complex):

5D3_2661_1600.jpg

For comparison, the original developed JPG images from my camera for the above images were 3.9MB and 9.8MB.

These limitations have been in place since I enabled the feature.

That photo is freakin' delicious whatever the size!! BTW, to save space I try to limit my photos on this site to a maximum of 800 pixels in height or width. Seems to work well with reasonable resolution and clarity. :)

Walrus, when you say you resorted to imgur, do you mean that you put only a link to the photo in your post, or did you use imgur to temporarily store the photo and had the LTG software fetch it from there?

The reason I ask is because imgur may have processed the photo so that it uses less storage space on their servers.

The photo in this post is stored on the LTG server, but if it passed through imgur it might be a smaller file than the one on your computer. Wait a minute, BRB. I just downloaded it. It's 2.02MB. How big is the file on your computer?

EDIT: Never mind. The photo is actually hosted on imgur.com, not stored by LTG. When you click on the photo LTG creates a slide show that might be local to LTG, but the big photo is still on imgur.com.

Yeah, allowing LTG to host photos does not preclude the old way of hosting somewhere else and linking to it here. You can do it either way but as people have been saying for years, uploading to LTG is much easier.

Hello

I'm using Apple mostly. Black seems to be the most consuming colour bitwise. So many pics are over 2MB limit - in Apple picture preview it is easy to resize the pic before sending. Naturally I make a copy first and then resize the copy.

Select a picture
In PREVIEW select TOOLS
Select Adjust size
Select smaller number than what is shown on picture size - press enter and see if it was reduced enough
If not - repeat.

Nope, it's not operator error. Walrus is right - something has changed. I've run into the same problem this past week while using EXACTLY the same technique as before, trying to load photos from my computer (taken with the same camera and image size as before). I am not a tech person at all & hate messing with this stuff, so when GAD set it up to simplify sharing pics, it was the first time I'd ever posted pics anywhere. Believe me, I had the process locked in.

To test this, I just tried posting an image of my Starfire III that I've successfully posted two times before in different threads. It gave me the "file too large" message.

OK GAD says nothing has changed but at this point I will bow out since maybe GAD is "wrong".

It's given me a message occasionally about file size. I do remember it happening. I just resized the photo in IrfanView (my photo editor of choice) and either changed the dimensions based on what Gary has said is the limit on the measurements or Resize using a lower quality which will keep the current dimensions but just cut information (detail) and make it a less densely packed photo. It usually doesn't take much. Things were running along so great and from my end they still are, hence my look of confusion.
