Yeah, she's somethin' else! I've been going through her catalog…way impressive. Like Julian Lage, not afraid at all of dissonance. She's been getting shoutouts from a bunch of YouTubers recently too. Yesterday's installment of Tom Bukovac's Homeskoolin', for example, via the amazing piano/keyboard player Gordon Mote.

One of my Madi favs:

But that bass player... something about her looks... she's my type! 😍
And additional bonus: Playing a Starfire bass! Her name is Anna Butterss and she's from Adelaide/Australia but living in L.A. now.

Bukovac's episode is where I heard of her! I love the Homeskoolin' videos - a lot!

Well, I guess I know who I'll be listening to tonight!! She's great. Brought Don in from the other room saying, "Who's that?" I need someone to get me off my Elle Sera kick that I haven't been able to shake.......

Check this one out. It's a song she evidently wrote and recorded for her Who Are You Now album, but it didn't make the cut and instead came out as a B-side. IMO this version blows the studio recording off the field.

I tend to like a lot of these "live" versions that she does quite a bit better than the official release videos!! I'm still listening..... put some more up. It's fun putting someone else in charge of the music every now and then!!

But I'll surely contribute.......

Tom, when I posted this thread, I knew you'd like her! Is it me or is there just a touch of Joni Mitchell in her vocals?

IMO this one is humorous. Not the song itself, which is on the dark side, but the video concept. It's in part a promo for AEA microphones…they specialize in repros of classic RCA ribbon mics as well as their own designs. It also caused me to haul my old Gibson Falcon out of storage and start using it again as a late-evening noodling around amp. 🎸 🎹 It's got one of the best sounding tremolos around, I think.

walrus she does have some similarities between her and Joni's voices especially when she flips up into her head voice which when she does it, makes me think of Joni. But she maintains her own sound and style, but I know what you're talking about. Very similar tones sometimes!! (y)

Madison has mentioned Joni Mitchell as a vocal influence, along with Jeff Buckley. I think Buckley may also have something to do with her fondness for "angular" guitar chords. She's also a huge Radiohead fan (me too!) and I think has some Thom Yorke vocal stuff goin' on at times.

IMO this version blows the studio recording off the field.

What I've found is when doing a studio recording, the anxiety of getting a "clean perfect take" often drains the energy out of the music. At least I find it to be so in my case (as a very unprofessional, undisciplined, and untrained musician). The best recordings are the ones where I don't care about mistakes and go for broke.

I hear the genetic material of Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke mixed together, gently sprinkled on a serving of Bjork.

I don't find new music much anymore, but this was a pleasant discovery. Thanks walrus!!
