Actually, if you can you should probably try a Guild D40-Standard, very nice guitars. Though you see them about at around $2K, you should be able to find one within your budget.

(If not, Chazmo and I know a nice little music store that has one or so...LOL)

With all defference to Charliea, I too feel that a 1 3/4" nut can be inportant and can instantly feel when one is not. That being said, I have played several D40-Standards and while I know they are the narrower 1 11/16" nut width, I could live with one. If you look hard enough, you may be able to find an all glossy body...

Actually, though I'm used to Guild's 12-string spacing of 1 13/16 (perfect IMO), I've played 1 3/4 and even 2". I could tell the difference, but didn't consider it a problem. Kind of a shame those other guys can't get it right, but hey!

I think that sixteenth inch makes a big difference, but more crucial is how the luthier shapes the neck & cuts the nut & saddle.

Mando, that's it! That's why I went for a NH-built 12 string and probably why I like the Standard-Series over my Tacoma-built D55...neck profile is everything.

So there you go Muffin, ya just gotta go out and try a whole bunch of guitars! The thrill is aways in the hunt anyway... =)

Yep. Mandolins can range in nut width from one inch to one & three eighths, but any can be comfortably, even wonderfully playable if they're set up right.

I'll chime in with Bluespicky - find a nice DV-52! You won't be sorry!

What you need Muffin, is a nice used DV-52. You will even have money left for beer, in addition to one the best sounding dread ever made.
Okay first of all I'm LAUGHING at you guys!! And I have to agree with Pascal (bluesypicky) about the DV52's and about rosewood!! Sound and tone is such a personal thing but I think rosewood is about as "woody" as you can get in sound. And if you get a DV (dreadnaught) then... you've got a beautiful woody tone with a nice GROWL to it!!

My best advice would be to enjoy the process and play as many guitars as you can get your hands on.... and realize that the price of the guitar is a journey and a bit of self-discovery!! That's what I think...... :encouragement:

I'm with 6L6. Find yourself a D55 (I personally prefer Westerly), and you'll most likely never even look for another 6 string dreadnaught. Of course, an F412 or F512 is an epic buy but may be tough for $1500.

I have a 1978 D-55 natural recently gone through by Mike Lull here in the Seattle area I have been thinking of selling as I am spending most of my playing time with my Tacoma era D-50. If a D-55 ends up being what you want IM me and we can probably work something out.

I guess I will have to do something else to make a little spending cash to feed my addiction to music. One thing I can do much better than play guitar is take pictures. I will have to set up an online gallery and sell a few photographs. I've got dozens like this:
