I'm in a discussion about a #1684 purported 1954 instrument, yet I swear I was informed here that '57 was the M20 birth year. In which way(s) am I wrong?

Hmmm, 1/2 hour no answer, think most folks east of the 'sippi are makin' or eatin' dinner.
Wish I had Hans' book here but about 99% certain the '57 intro date is correct and recall seeing discussions on the reason for the s/n snafus, was it that they mistakenly repeated a series?
Didn't try to "store it" in memory 'cause I never expected to become a big M20 fan, like the F40 box the best now.
FWIW, bet they got the date from Guild's s/n site which doesn't address the glitches we know about here.
Ah, here we go:
http://www.letstalkguild.com/ltg/showthread.php?194833-NGD-Guild-M-20-(1958-)
A '58 with a lower s/n than the one you're talking about, pic of label showing "1098", and Hans chiming in about the fact they didn't have s/n's on the headstock in that particular period, post #9.
We know he would have corrected the dating if necessary.

Either a number is missing, or prefix letters, (I believe M20s are AH or OE).

IIRC, there was a period in the late 50s when some SNs from earlier were mistakenly re-used. Wonder if that is the case here...

Hello Jedzep,

According to my research the M-20 was first listed in the 1958 price list, but the first M-20s were already made towards the end of 1957.
That particular M-20 with serial # 1684 was done in 1959. I've already explained the discrepancy re. these 4 digit numbers that look like early '50s numbers in an earlier posting.

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Reverb is a good place to scroll through pictures of vintage M-20, just a few examples:

But also others:

When searching you even find some interesting conversions like this: http://www.chubbuckguitars.com/blog/2012/04/23/1962-guild-m-20-conversion

Here is my 1968 M-20 (date per Hans Moust)...the Seller had marketed this as a 1965. Perhaps not as old as you are seeking? Despite some hubub at first acquisition...this is (by far) my favorite guitar to dink around on. Just changed the strings after about a year and shocked once again. This thing is just a little fun-box. It does have a narrow 1 5/8" nut width...and is one of the things that I love about it. This one remains in my 'never sell' pile. Happy Thanksgiving...Happy day off work...happy eating/drinking/family time to all.

Gorgeous! It is what I’m looking for. The grain on the mahogany is gorgeous on yours. The pickguard looks black, I like that look.

My m20 is never to be sold. It’s reassuring to hear that (with proper care, of course) the sound gets better.
