This popped up while looking for the Highwaymen's version for another thread, got a suspicion he's playing a DE-500 reissue from the '80's that Hans mentioned a while back:

Related note:

My band wanted to cover that tune but the rhythm guitarist wanted to cover the Johnny Cash version and I wanted to cover the Outlaws version!

I wrote up an arrangement where we would start with the Cash verse and chorus and the kick it up into the Outlaws style!

Which version do you like better?

Johnny Cash:

Or the Outlaws in the next post!

(Can't post two videos in one thread!)

If the question was to me specifically I couldn't pick one over the other, it'd depend on my mood, it's just one of those great songs.
(Always liked the Outlaws' "Green Grass and High Tides")
I do like your idea of doing an arrangement that uses both ends of the spectrum, I love to do that with a lot of "show tunes" I cover that one wouldn't expect, like "Chim Chim Cheree" and "My Favorite Things"...."Goldfinger"...even started trying it out on "The Look of Love" last weekend.
Just stick a rave-up at the end of anything a la the Yardbirds... great fun!

I'm partial to the Johnny Cash version, but like Al said, your own version with a mash-up of both would be very cool!

At least the Outlaws got the gender of the cattle right - it wasn't a herd of red-eyed COWS, it was steers. You don't drive cows, you milk 'em.

How many times will a Filipino cowboy band in Olongapo play that song for 5 dollar American?

I know, I know, FNG! As many times as you want! Five dolla each time, Joe.

When I was in Po city, the main song blaring from all the bars on main street was "Smoke On De Water."
