I recently acquired this F-40K from a former Tacoma plant employee. His boss told him to take a couple of guitars when the plant shut down; he doesn't even play guitar. Been sitting on this one and a CO-2 for the last 10 years. The guitar is in mint condition; the protective film was still on the pick guard. I arranged to meet him in Oregon while I was on vacation. I would have bought the CO-2 as well if I had the funds at the time. It has a gorgeous burst finish. I may try to get it from him.

The F-40K is really stunning. The koa has a great tone and the appointments are really nice: bone saddle, nut and bridge pins, tortoiseshell binding, Gotoh tuners. The only thing missing was the original case, which he didn't have. I have tracked down the correct case and ordered it. I'm working on the set up (needs a truss rod adjustment) otherwise its dead mint.

Now I got something to play with while I'm waiting for the D-55 to get fixed.

The D55 better come back in prime condition or you will be tempted to change the playing order. F40 is a great guitar!

That is one sweet axe! Tacoma made some superb Guilds. And at least the TRC isn't upside down on this one!

What does the Koa back and sides sound like ?
Taylor Guitars describes it as follows: "A tropical hardwood, koa's tone blends the midrange of mahogany with the top end of maple. Due to its density, a new koa guitar tends to start out sounding a little bright and tight, somewhat like maple. But the more a koa guitar is played, the more the sound opens up, expanding the midrange and rewarding the player with a richer, sweeter, more resonant tone. A common mistake is when a bright player buys a koa guitar in part for its visual beauty, finds it to be too bright, and doesn't play it enough to allow the wood to warm up.
Goes Well With: Fingerstylists who play more with the pads of their fingers and tend to have a meatier touch. Bright players need to be careful because of koa's existing brightness (one might try experimenting with different pick materials)
."

Interesting, that's the first time I've ever seen it cited as having similarities to maple.
All of a sudden it occurred to me:
Consider the source:
Taylor Guitars.
Not a maker I associate with strong low-end tone.
To be fair I know like anybody else they're capable of building really strong-sounding guitars, but I associate 'em with that kind of "airy" (scooped mids and bass) Dave Matthews Band generic and almost boringly "consistent" tone.
A strength and a weakness at the same time, in my almost completely irrelevant opinion.
But maybe their build techniques make Koa sound like they describe, in their guitars.

It sounds a lot more like rosewood than maple, that's for sure. Granted this guitar has seen no playing time but I believe it did sit out in the open most of the time. I finally got the truss rod adjusted and put on a fresh set of strings and it sounds awesome. The high end is bright but not tinny, lots of midrange and a surprisingly deep low end. I think it will change with more playing time (which I'm diligently working at). I'm mostly a flat picker and after trying a few different picks I found a very thin celluloid pick sounded best.

Very nice !!! Congratulations! A very special guitar!
Ralf

Thanks, Ralf. You are correct: its a very special guitar. Does anyone have any idea what the current value for this guitar would be? I have not been able to find any comparable listings.
