I found a Westerly made D-55 for sale through an estate sale and I'm curious about what year it's from. I'm guessing mid to late '90's. SN is AD551821. The guitar is in great condition. Hopefully I can land this one.

Thanks,
JJ

From what I can see, it would be some time after 1997, when the online chart cuts off. That's puts it in a very good period for the Westerly plant. Hopefully, Hans will be along to clarify, and I hope you land it!

I can narrow it a bit more until Hans would confirm exactly. 1821 should be late 2000 or 2001. 15xx was around mid year 2000 and 20xx around year 2001.

I did! It is on it's way to the Old Pueblo from Oklahoma. Took a while to negotiate with the family member who was selling it. The guitar belonged to his father who recently passed away. I'm excited to get this guitar after hearing all the great reviews. And I can pin down the build date for Hans who did contact me with an approximate date of 2000.

The D-55 showed up the day before I left on vacation. A quick check and I found a few issues: worn frets, cracked binding along neck, loose binding on back, about a 2" scratch in the top that looked like someone put finger nail polish on, and it was generally dirty. The rest of it was in great shape. I cleaned it up when I got home, put on new set of strings, and it sounds great. I took it over to a local luthiers yesterday and he's going go through it. He's pretty busy so I might not see it back for a month but that's okay. I paid a very reasonable price.

Sounds like you are well pleased and give us a full report when you get it back from your luthier.
