Playing while sitting on a tall stool and with a strap makes the guitar much more comfortable to play.
Standing would be best but my back won't allow that.
I went through a process where I revisited the ergonomics of my playing position and using a taller stool, instead of a chair and using a strap when seated made a huge difference. Most of the pain associated with my playing comes from having to listen to me, but I did find some minor aches stopped. A good piece of advice I got was after some general ideas about posture, just spend some time with the instrument, not playing, but holding and experimenting. That will help you decide strap height and also a good "angle" to your body. 45 degrees is a good recommendation for bass for various reasons but it also made my fretting side's shoulder movements easier. That made a big difference when the bass was a B-50.
