The more I think about it, the less sense this makes. Once you've got a template for the fret slots you could use any number of physical points on the board to index the template. What keeps tugging at the back of my head though is I feel like you'd want your baseline that you measure from to be a point that creates natural or accidental notes on all strings at that point. But I can't really explain why I think it should be that way.
