I put the mic to my DV52 at the rim of the rosette, and got 0.141 thousands of an inch, 3.514 mm. Don't know if that is consistent throughout.

Ralph

I put the mic to my DV73 NT HG at the rim of the rosette, and got 0.126 thousands of an inch, 3.2004mm.

By the way, the "shop" is actually an auction house, and in addition to the DV73, they were also auctioning a DV72 NT-MK, bearing S/N AD720188. So you can add this one to your spreadsheet, if it is not there already.
Done. Thanks.

So I was able to acquire this guitar. More on that later.

Below are the serial numbers and neck block dates of my DV72, DV72-MK and DV73:

DV72 - AD720104 - March 17, 1994

DV72-MK - AD720128 - April 12, 1994

DV73 - AD720177 - September 29, 1994

So unless all of the 1994 DV73s (S/Ns AD73 0001 - 0014) were produced after September 29, 1994, it appears that this guitar is not a “transitional” one, and that it erroneously received a DV72 S/N.

This can be confirmed if we can get the neck block date of any of those early DV73s.

Also, FYI, the neck block date on my DV76 is April 15, 1994.

Congrats! (I thought your "stay tuned" might mean you were going after it!)

As for conjecture on whether your newly acquired DV-73 predates AD7300001... the earliest SN I have in my DV-73 spreadsheet is mine... #19, and it was made in early 1995. However, F312 (Ralph) has or had a 1994 DV-73. I don't know its SN, but in post 45 of this thread, he said that the NB date was 22 Nov 1994. That would be the earliest DV-73 I know of (SN lists suggest 14 73s made that year)... and the neck block date on your IS earlier.

...based on the neck block date, I would expect your newly acquired DV-73 to have the bracing pattern 3, with the soundhole reinforcement plate, seen on other 1994 DVs and dreads See my blog for more details):

A lot said here so this may have been covered already. My DV52 (Mar 10 1999) has the soundhole reinforcement plate.

Based on Ralph’s DV73’s serial # (008), it is looking more as if mine predates #001, which could make it one of the first, if not the first DV73s produced. Whether the DV72 s/n was issued in error, or because it is a “transitional” example, however, remains unresolved.

Your long-awaited answer arrives on January 1, regarding the #1 DV73 NT HG with S/N AD730001. You'll be happy to hear it was born on November 1, 1994 and was delivered through the hands of Bob Turner at Bizarre Guitar in Phoenix to me on January 20, 1995. I was told my "Sedona" was a prototype that had been granted to Bob because of his reputation as the VIP Guild Dealer of the West, just down the road from Sedona, AZ. I was also told that on the day I gained ownership, the model was introduced at the NAMM show in Anaheim. Many stories, adventures and, of course songs, have come out of our beautiful 28-year relationship. You'll notice I own 1 Guild. Very happy and feeling blessed with what has come to be affectionately known as "My Baby."

This info should give you more to work with, and I'm most curious about the origins of that DV73 - AD720177 - September 29, 1994. Could that have been the "Prototype" Bob was referring to?

Mine doesn’t have a prototype serial #, so I assume it is a production model. But with Guild you never know, so we will have to wait for Hans, the authoritative source for all things Guild, to weigh in.

I read one page (Westerly?) that said only 50 were made. I have one and I'm not sure exactly what to do with it. I traded it for studio time. I like it, but I have a D50 that I'm perfectly happy with, and I think this one is worth quite a bit. Thinking about selling...

They are definitely desirable and have value. I would suggest posting some pictures and providing some information about it and I am sure you will garner some interest.

And if you choose to sell it, you can post a separate For Sale thread.
