Wood looks nice, but I'm not sure what to make of the dark blobs - is that in the wood or did something
happen under the lacquer?

My opinion, worth what you paid for it, is the "blobs" are natural artifacts of the wood. I base that on similar markings on the other side and some of the similar striations.

In fact now that I see the pic below I wonder if the back is bookmatched?

To my eyes, those blobs look like something in the wood - oil or
pigmentation? - somehow leached into the lacquer.
Kinda cool looking, whatever it is...

back looks like figured IE bookmatched...natural figuration from the look of it...wouldn't guess on the sides...anything possible...but there's a lot of straight grained Braz and figured IE out there...ask the expert.

I had a D 50 with the same dark spots. Looked cool as hell I thought. I ended up selling it. If I remember right I asked Hans about it and I think he said it was natural oil in the rosewood.

Someone sanded that poor bridge down pretty far. It is almost flat on the treble side.

that is some really nice rw, i have seen that spotting on similar cuts of rw, that is standard for this variety. i alwyas thought these were Brazilian. not long ago i learned they are likely EIRW. really, really, nice guitar right there. there are some early 70s out there w that spotting and similar grain for sure. it’s in the wood.
