Being a newbie Starfire owner I am curious as to the proper designation of the number. My Starfire 4's label is clearly written SF4-BK. I referred to it in my last post and in my signature as a Starfire 4, however I see many forum members refer to them in Roman numerals like Starfire IV. Which is correct or is it a personal choice?

Hans would probably know for sure, but the catalogs i have show roman numerals in the '60s, '70s, '90s, and '00s. Some of the truss rod covers say SF4.

Also, as someone who writes about them, I tend to favor "4" over "IV" because a) the point is made, and b) I think it's more likely that people will search for "4".

GAD you are spot on once again........the truss rod cover on mine is engraved SF-4, and the label is SF4. I think I will stay true to the factory and stay with Starfire 4.

I think they technically/officially switched to arabic numerals sometime in the mid/late 1970s, probably around the same time they introduced those model-specific engraved TRCs.

The literature I found shows:

All 60ies and until 1972: SF-IV (not Starfire IV)
I didn't have any 1973 literature or 1974 catalog.
A 1974 advertising shows: SF-4 !
1975 until 1982: Starfire 4
I have no info 1983-1985
1986 Pricelist: SF-4
1997 until 2005: Starfire IV
2013 until today: Starfire IV

Literature description of models and names on labels didn't always match...

Good job! :cheerful: But I would confuse the hell out of some people with that name! Not many know anymore what M, D, C, L are.
It's always fun the other way around like what number MMMCMXCIX is (3999 or MMM CM XC IX).
