Not very informative :-(

I do not see any defect in Rooftop's guitar's top that demands a replacement.
Plus (imho) it would mean a total change of the guitar's DNA and erase a large bit of it's value.

I agree with you Moritz, I think Ideal was simply answering the original thread title question with "Here's what I would do" ("If it were me").
I almost called him on not reading the original post to understand Rooftop's actual question and intent ("preserve the mojo"), but re-reading his post showed me he did: "no lack of opinions here".
You guys are just at diverging angles of thought.
I don't think Ideal's really suggesting outright re-topping, he's just pointing out the pitfalls himself, more like a traditional veer:

I owned a Guild 1974 F50 in about the same shape as your D55 that I paid $350 to have re-finished. I was not happy with both the sound and appearance results.
I did sense a certain self-deprecating humor in that first clause.
